But because of its thin consistency, it fell just shy of being the best on the list. With a silky texture and great flavor, the Classico sauce is my overall favorite.

Before I made Hall's pie, I needed to prepare the dough. Paige BennettThough the other recipes I tested called for premade pie dough or canned sweet potato, Hall's version of the pie didn't come with shortcuts. The recipe also called for making pie dough from scratch using sugar, salt, all-purpose flour, and unsalted butter. I dissolved the sugar and salt in hot water, let the mixture cool, and then combined it with cold, cubed butter and flour. Making the dough was a little time-consuming, but overall, it was one of the easiest homemade pie crusts I've made.

The prep was minimal and most of the recipe just required watching and stirring. The whole, peeled tomatoes broke down nicely. Paige BennettI was worried adding the whole, peeled tomatoes would create a weird texture (the other recipes used crushed tomatoes) but they broke down nicely as the sauce simmered. From there, it was mostly a game of watching the pot, stirring occasionally throughout 45 minutes, and pouring in a little water when the sauce started to look dry. I finished the sauce with a handful of fresh basil and it was ready to pour over some noodles.

The process involved rolling the baked potatoes in a salt mixture. Paige BennettGarten's baked potatoes sounded pretty fancy, but they were simple to make. Instead of putting the rosemary, lemon zest, and salt in the food processor, I was able to quickly chop them to make a salt mixture. About 50 minutes in, I used a small food processor to combine the whipped-feta ingredients. It smelled so good that I knew I'd be making this again to top other recipes.
