MEXICO CITY — The mayor of the capital of Mexico’s violence-plagued state of Guerrero was killed on Sunday less than a week after he took office, the state’s governor confirmed. Alejandro Arcos was killed just six days after he took office as mayor of the city of Chilpancingo, a city of around 280,000 people in southwestern Mexico. Arcos' death comes just three days after the new city government’s secretary, Francisco Tapia, was shot to death. At least six candidates for public office were killed in the state in the run-up to Mexico's June 2 elections. Arcos' social media posts show the mayor in recent days had been supervising disaster relief efforts following the impact of Hurricane John last month, which caused severe flooding in beach resort Acapulco and surrounding towns.

CNN —Mexico is set to elect its first female president, with preliminary results showing Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico City’s former mayor and climate scientist, is on track to win the country’s largest election in history. The 61-year-old rode the wave of popularity of her longtime political ally, the outgoing leftist Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and their Morena party. Not only is she set to be Mexico’s first female president, Sheinbaum will also be the country’s first leader of Jewish heritage, although she rarely speaks publicly about her personal background and has governed as a secular leftist. Supporters of Claudia Sheinbaum celebrate during an election rally in Mexico City on June 2, 2024. If the court validates the election, Sheinbaum will take office on October 1.

Former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum speaks after being named presidential candidate of the ruling Morena party for next year's presidential election in Mexico City on September 6, 2023. Voters in Mexico are participating in the country's largest election ever — casting votes Sunday to fill more than 20,000 local, state and federal positions and almost certainly elect their first female president. But rampant violence has marred the road toward one of the most consequential elections in Mexico's history. Violence against political figures has also persisted throughout this election cycle, resulting in a 150% increase in the number of victims of political violence since 2021, according to an analysis from Integralia, a public affairs consulting firm that researches political risk and other issues in Mexico. These have greatly dismayed Mexican voters, leading most of them to cite security as a top issue of concern.

Here’s who is running for president:Claudia SheinbaumThe 61-year-old Sheinbaum is a former Mexico City mayor and climate scientist. A longtime political ally of incumbent President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, she was the Mexico City environment secretary from 2000-2006 when he was mayor. Her close alignment with López Obrador has been both a blessing and a curse politically. (López Obrador has repeatedly dismissed whispers that he favors a candidate that he could influence, telling press in February that he would “retire completely” after his term.) For a relative newcomer, Galvez’s entry into the presidential race has gained impressive momentum, experts say.

Local media reported that Romero Deschamps died of a heart attack on Thursday. Days earlier, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that Romero Deschamps was under criminal investigation for corruption, allegations which he denied and was never prosecuted for. Romero Deschamps was included in a list of the "10 Most Corrupt Mexicans" published by Forbes in 2013. He, however, rode out scandals even as other top Mexican union leaders fell foul of the law, including the former boss of the powerful teachers' union, Elba Esther Gordillo, who was arrested on fraud charges early in 2013. While a government audit later revealed anomalies covering 2.3 billion pesos ($188.97 million) in the so-called Pemexgate scandal, Romero Deschamps himself escaped unscathed.

That level of collusion may be unique to the state of Guerrero, experts say, where the long history of drug trafficking and a heavily militarized state presence would have created fertile ground for such relationships. But in Mexico, the lines between trafficking organizations and the state have long been blurry, scholars say. And that has had profound consequences not just for organized crime, but for the development of the Mexican state itself. ‘Criminal state-building’“There really is no binary between the ‘bad’ cartels and the ‘good’ state,” said Alexander Aviña, an Arizona State historian who studies the drug trade in Mexico. Rather, he said, there is a long history of Mexican officials taking money from drug traffickers to fund the government, not just personal bribes.

Ebrard's campaign has for weeks said there were problems in the national voter survey to choose a MORENA candidate, and in recent days stepped up warnings. Shortly afterward, Ebrard issued a statement saying police had prevented his representatives from entering where the party was counting the national poll ballots. In another video shared on social media, Ebrard said the situation was becoming "more and more like the PRI", or the Institutional Revolutionary Party. KAMNIK, Slovenia Aug 4 (Reuters) - Torrential rains described by rescuers as "biblical" hit northern and western Slovenia on Friday, disrupting traffic and causing black outs, with helicopters evacuating people from some areas. Rescuers struggled to reach flooded areas and issued a public call for rubber boats in places where roads were closed and impassable due to landslides. Helicopters evacuated people trapped at their homes in the town of Skofja Loka, where vehicles and trucks were submerged or taken by torrents, local media reported. "We have not seen floods like these not just in 500 years, but in a 1,000 years," Roman Kocilija, chief of the rescuers in the village of Most pri Komendi, was quoted as saying by local media. He appealed to citizens to stay indoors in the town of Kamnik, where authorities declared an emergency situation and closed kindergartens.

Neither the president's office nor Galvez, who represents the center-right National Action Party (PAN), replied to requests for comment. Lopez Obrador has sought to break this narrative by branding Galvez a millionaire, said Roy Campos, Mitofsky's director. The authority this week ordered Lopez Obrador to remain neutral and abstain from election comments. Under Fox's government, Congress in 2005 stripped Lopez Obrador of immunity from prosecution over a minor land dispute. Ebrard, a leading contender to succeed Lopez Obrador, on Tuesday announced that he would step down next week. Under Lopez Obrador, MORENA in less than five years has replaced the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) as the establishment party. Lopez Obrador has been urging MORENA to fight for a two-thirds congressional super-majority next year. Most recent polling gives Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum a slight edge over Ebrard in the succession battle, and senior aides to the president have told Reuters they believe she is Lopez Obrador's preferred candidate. The victory adds Mexico's most populous region to the 21 other states MORENA already controls, now more than two-thirds of the total. The centrist PRI has governed the State of Mexico since 1929, the date from which it began its long domination of Mexico. Defeated for the presidency in 2000, it bounced back in 2012 but was drubbed by Lopez Obrador six years later. The voting comes a year before Mexico's next presidential election, with polls indicating MORENA will be hard to beat. Del Moral has said the PRI learned from its mistakes and that her coalition would be a broader alternative to MORENA. As she cast her ballot, del Moral told reporters the vote was historic because for the first time a woman would be elected to govern the state. Guillermo Fuentes, a 55-year-old PRI supporter and small business owner, said del Moral, not MORENA, was the one who would deliver change to the State of Mexico. MEXICO CITY, April 12 (Reuters) - The United States has said it will return money and assets confiscated from a convicted former senior Mexican state official that were worth over $246 million, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday. The U.S. Justice Department this week notified Mexico's attorney general's office that it had accepted a request from the Mexican government to recover the assets, which Lopez Obrador said were worth more than $246 million. Lopez Obrador told a news conference he wanted some of the money to go to programs focused on preventing drug consumption. Villarreal, who served under the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was ultimately convicted in Texas of money laundering. Lopez Obrador is hoping his National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) can change that, but opinion polls suggest the party is facing an uphill struggle due to internal splits.
