In 1970 there had been only 18,333 students enrolled at degree-granting for-profit schools, less than a quarter of a percent of the total number of college students. In 2010, Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate's education committee, began a two-year investigation into for-profit schools. But even more shocking, federal money flowing to for-profit schools accounted for 25% of all federal student aid and 47% of eventual loan defaults. Students' money enriched every corner of the for-profit industry except one: quality of instruction. In fact, these for-profit students were actually worse off than if they hadn't gone to school at all.

Our oldest is taking advantage of early college programsRecently, I attended an orientation with my 16-year-old for her early college program. I wasn't familiar with early college programs, but they've become popular in our local area, both for the support they can offer teens transitioning to college and the cost savings they can offer. Students in the program take an additional year of high school that's a full college course load and then graduate from high school with up to 60 college credits, sometimes enough for a full associate degree. Along with the early college program, I took the small amount of savings we did have for her and opened a 529 education account. The catch is that all the money has to be used for educational purposes, but things such as trade school and school expenses qualify.

The Education Department is assuring schools and students that its financial aid process is under control, after a botched overhaul over the past year that some colleges say has dented incoming classes. Brisbane, Australia CNN —A senior Australian Catholic clergyman has been charged with historical sex offenses allegedly committed while he was serving as the bishop of Broome, a remote diocese in Western Australia. Emeritus Bishop Christopher Saunders was arrested on Wednesday at his home in Broome, where he became bishop in 1996, according to CNN affiliate Seven News. Saunders is the highest-ranking Australian Catholic official charged with historical sex abuse charges since Cardinal George Pell faced court over historical assaults allegedly committed in the late 1990s. Of the survivors who reported being abused in a religious institution, 61.4% said the abuse occurred in a Catholic organization. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse reported that 7% of Australian Catholic priests had been accused of abusing children.

But if you’re applying for aid and have grandparents who want to help, you may be in luck. But now, thanks to a 2020 law that went into effect this year, those questions about money and income are gone.
