Hedge fund billionaire David Tepper's bet on China involved increasing his exposure to the leading e-commerce companies in the world's second-largest economy, according to the latest securities filing. Tepper's Appaloosa Management more than doubled its position in Temu parent PDD Holdings in the third quarter, according to the hedge fund's quarterly filing. Between Alibaba , PDD and JD.com , Appaloosa held roughly $2 billion of Chinese e-commerce stocks at the end of September. The quarterly hedge fund filing released Thursday showed only positions in U.S.-traded equities, including American depositary receipts, and some derivatives. PDD 6M mountain Chinese stocks like PDD Holdings have been volatile in recent months.

The JPMorgan report initiated coverage of U.S.-listed ZTO Express , which the analysts said is China's largest express parcel player with more than 20% of the market. Chinese online retailer Temu will be investigated on whether it may have breached EU tech rules against the sale of illegal products, EU tech regulators said on Thursday, in a move which could lead to hefty fines for the company. Temu, which has 92 million users in the 27-country European Union, is a unit of Chinese ecommerce giant PDD Holdings . The EU tech enforcer will also investigate whether Temu is complying with the DSA obligation to provide researchers access to its publicly accessible data. Particularly in ensuring that products sold on their platform meet EU standards and do not harm consumers," EU antitrust and tech chief Margrethe Vestager said in a statement. Temu could face a fine of as much as 6% of its global turnover if found guilty of breaching the DSA.

SHANGHAI — ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming is China’s richest person, with personal wealth of $49.3 billion, an annual rich list showed Tuesday, although counterparts in real estate and renewables have fared less well. Zhang, 41, who stepped down in 2021 as chief executive of ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, becomes the 18th individual to be crowned China’s richest person in the 26 years since the Hurun China Rich List was first published. He overtook bottled water magnate Zhong Shanshan, who slipped to second place as his fortune dropped 24%, to $47.9 billion.
