Wildfires and their burn scars have made portions of the trail more hazardous and forced hikers to contend with closures on quick notice. Meanwhile, when fast-moving wildfires strike, many rural communities along the trail are finding themselves responsible for helping vulnerable hikers. “Wildfire season is lasting longer, becoming less predictable, affecting more trail, more trail users and more trail communities,” Rylee said. The signals of climate change now stick out on the PCT, said John O’Brien, a California climate scientist who grew up near the trail and hikes on it frequently. Karen Altergott passed through this burn zone in Lassen Volcanic National Park while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2022.

Since 1928, the S & P 500 has finished up 20% or more about 36% of the time. Yes, 2022 was down about 19%, but the S & P has posted declines of 10% or more only 12% of the time since 1928. Could the S & P gain 20% again in 2024? That run from 1995 to 1999 was certainly epic, but that was the last time the S & P 500 saw back-to-back 20% gains. Regardless, with the S & P 500 closing the year at 4,769, a 20% gain next year would mean the S & P would hit 5,722.

The S&P 500 has become more volatile in recent years, according to research firm DataTrek. The bigger factor is the massive growth of big tech stocks that make up more and more of the S&P 500. "The S&P 500 has become noticeably more volatile over the last +60 years, but returns have not increased commensurately," DataTrek said in a note published Thursday. AdvertisementAdvertisementHere's why the research firm sees higher risk in the stock market today than in past eras. Unexpected developments hit harderAnother explanation is that the market in recent years has had an outsized reaction to unanticipated developments relative to past eras.

The researchers trained their semantic decoder on dozens of hours of brain activity data from participants, collected in an fMRI scanner. Scientists have developed a noninvasive AI system focused on translating a person's brain activity into a stream of text, according to a peer-reviewed study published Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience . PH.D. STUDENT JERRY TANG PREPARES TO COLLECT BRAIN ACTIVITY DATA IN THE BIOMEDICAL IMAGING CENTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN. Once the AI system is trained, it can generate a stream of text when the participant is listening to or imagines telling a new story. According to a news release, the trained system produces text that closely or precisely matches the intended meaning of the participant's original words around half of the time.

CNN —My first stirrings of discomfort at Taylor Swift’s show in Las Vegas hit after the infectious beat faded from fan-favorite “Cruel Summer,” the second song in her supersized set. Challenging double standardsTaylor Swift flexes during her performance at Allegient Stadium in Las Vegas. And whether we were cringing in our seats, like me, or cheering her on, also like me, her words delivered a powerful message. Like Swift, who will perform for over three straight hours on every night of this 52-stop tour, I’m also an endurance athlete. Over the course of this tour, millions of women will watch her share her success.
Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic fantasy but closer to a reality predicted to transform many industries. "It's still very early, but ChatGPT described as the iPhone moment for the artificial intelligence technology industry feels about right to us." The tech fund manager also told CNBC's Pro Talks that four large-cap stocks were driving some of the biggest and most tangible advancements in artificial intelligence. Microsoft Microsoft could be one of the top options for investors looking to invest in artificial intelligence, according to Rogoff, lead manager of Polar Capital Technology Trust plc. The tech fund manager pointed to the company's 90% market share in search, where it can deploy its own ChatGPT-like language model.
The S&P 500 is up more than 8% this year led by a basket of mega-cap stocks, including chip stock Nvidia , which is up by around 90%. Both stocks are among Polar Capital Technology Trust's top 10 holdings. The fund manager also discussed the impact of a recession on FAANG stocks, which have been the primary drivers of the market rally this year. He joined Polar Capital in 2003. He's the lead manager of the Polar Capital Technology Trust, and fund manager of the Polar Capital Global Technology Fund and the Automation and Artificial Intelligence Fund.
In 2016, physical and emotional injuries from his military service in Iraq had made life feel unbearable for Will “Akuna” Robinson. “Between my chronic pain, nerve damage, blood pressure, depression, anxiety and insomnia, I was taking almost 30 pills a day,” he recalls. “I had never been hiking before in my life.” Within weeks he was at the PCT trailhead in Southern California. Three years later, in 2019, he became the first known Black man to have conquered the Appalachian, Pacific Crest and Continental Divide scenic trails—America’s triple crown of hiking. In 2021 ESPN anointed him “the trailblazing superstar of thru-hiking,” the term for hiking a long trail end-to-end.

Britain's housing market has slowed markedly in recent months as higher mortgage rates and broader economic concerns deter buyers. The FTSE 100 (.FTSE) company proposed a final dividend of 60 pence per share for fiscal 2022 as per its new capital allocation policy. Persimmon has paid an annual dividend of 235 pence per share for the last five fiscal years except one, when pandemic lockdowns disrupted operations. Analysts had said in January that British housebuilders might cut dividends to preserve cash and ride out the property downturn. Persimmon stock slid as much as 10% to a near seven-week low of 1,310 pence and was the top percentage loser on the blue-chip FTSE 100 (.FTSE) index.
[1/2] Samples of products of Fresenius and Fresenius Medical Care are on display during the company's annual news conference at their head quarters in Bad Homburg Germany, February 20, 2019. "The new structure will greatly benefit both companies: Fresenius Medical Care needs an operational turnaround, to improve its performance and focus on its core business." "Fresenius needs to simplify its complex corporate structures and commit to its Operating Companies and to maximizing value from its investments," Sen said. FMC is expected to hold an extraordinary general meeting in July to let shareholders vote on the proposed change of the legal form, Fresenius said. Frankfurt-listed shares of Fresenius and FMC were up 1% and 2.2%, respectively.
Other data showed consumer confidence eased in January, with inflation expectations over the next twelve months climbing to 6.8% from 6.6% last month. Investors will also closely monitor comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell following the announcement for clues on the path of monetary policy. Markets will also grapple with a host of U.S. economic data this week, culminating in Friday's payrolls report for January. Economic data for the euro zone showed slight growth for the fourth quarter, but further weakness is expected this year. The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) lost 0.22% and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe (.MIWD00000PUS) gained 0.20%.
Investors widely expect the Federal Reserve will raise rates by 25 basis points (bps) on Wednesday, with announcements on Thursday from the Bank of England and European Central Bank (ECB), both of which are largely expected to hike by 50 bps. The U.S. corporate earnings season also rolls on, with earnings this week expected from Apple (AAPL.O), Alphabet (GOOGL.O) and Amazon (AMZN.O). The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) lost 0.17% and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe (.MIWD00000PUS) shed 0.99%. Stocks in Europe closed lower, with rate-sensitive names such as technology shares among the primary decliners after inflation data from Spain came in above expectations while other data showed the German economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter. The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) lost 0.17% and MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe (.MIWD00000PUS) shed 0.85%. U.S. Treasury yields rose ahead of the central bank meetings and economic data, with the 10-year yield up for a third consecutive session. European stocks have vastly outperformed their U.S. peers. The euro STOXX (.STOXXE) benchmark has beaten its U.S. peer, the S&P 500 (.SPX), by over 18 percentage points since September. "It's a very big move in European gas prices and that has dramatically improved the outlook. "Lower gas prices are surely a positive, but their rapid fall also tell us that they can rise just as fast should things go wrong. A closely watched index of European corporate credit (.MERER00) has seen its yield fall nearly 50 basis points this year.
The most recent market bottom occurred on October 12th, when the S & P 500 closed at 3,577. At the time, analysts were quite optimistic about 2023 earnings, expecting them to come in at $239, up almost 8% from the 2022 earnings estimates. That translates into a forward multiple (P/E ratio) of 15 times 2023 earnings. Other strategists have also noticed that the S & P 500, despite a 20% drop in 2022, is still trading at a rich valuation. Instead of $237, estimates are now $229, and the multiple is now 16.7 times forward earnings.
One hospital worker says the COVID-19, flu, and RSV outbreak reminded them of the early pandemic. We no longer have a separate floor for COVID-19 patients because there aren't any extra rooms available. The COVID-19, flu, and RSV patients are put on the same floor as the cancer, tuberculosis, and shingles patients. Flu and RSV patients also share some of the same treatments and equipments as COVID-19 patients. We don't put immunocompromised patients next to flu or RSV patients, but we do put them next to the COVID-19 patients.
