Inside Microsoft's struggles with Copilot
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Ashley Stewart | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +23 min
In September 2023, Microsoft's famously soft-spoken CEO, Satya Nadella, unveiled the company's flagship AI product, Copilot, with sweeping fanfare. Some of Microsoft's own employees and executives are privately concerned that Copilot won't be able to deliver on its ambitions. Copilot's struggles have created an opening for Microsoft's rivals, some of whom have seized on the opportunity to promote their own agendas. "Now, when Joe Blow logs into an account and kicks off Copilot, they can see everything," said one Microsoft employee familiar with customer complaints. As complaints and questions over Copilot mount, so does the pressure to justify Microsoft's unprecedented level of spending on AI.

Jim Cramer names hot sectors that could use a pullback
  + stars: | 2024-11-14 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday suggested the post-election market has been extreme, with big wins and big losses. "We have a lot of overly loved stocks in this market right now," he said. Cramer pointed out the sharp rise of enterprise software stocks, saying that it seems these companies with in-demand products for big corporations can do no wrong. Cramer also highlighted two sectors he said are "too hated," but could bounce back, including pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. For semiconductors, Cramer concluded that those companies have suffered in part because some feel that new artificial intelligence-powered PCs haven't taken off.

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and our retail stocks are well-positioned to thrive, according to Wall Street research firm Telsey Advisory Group. Telsey Advisory expects value-seeking to be a key theme among shoppers this year, which puts companies with reputations for good deals on solid ground. Overall, the firm expects holiday retail sales up between 3% to 3.5% this year, compared with 4.6% growth last year and a 5.4% increase in 2022. Costco has had a good year so far, and that should continue in the final months of 2024, Telsey Advisory argued. Intel’s getting kicked out of the Dow

Intel’s shares (INTC) have declined 54% this year, making it the worst performer on the index and leaving it with the lowest stock price on the price-weighted Dow. The stock fell about 1% in extended trading on Friday, while Nvidia (NVDA) was up 1.5%. Launched in 1968, the Silicon Valley pioneer sold memory chips before switching to processors that helped launch the personal computer industry. In the 1990s, “Intel Inside” stickers turned commodity electronic components into premium products and eventually became ubiquitous on laptops. The company’s 10-for-one stock split in June also helped pave the way for its addition to the index, making its soaring shares more accessible to retail traders.

Bottom line The main part of our AMD thesis — fast-growing sales of its MI300 AI chips — is still on track, so we view the post-earnings pullback as a buying opportunity. Given how integral these AI chips are to AMD's growth, we were pleased management on Tuesday night raised its full-year sales projections to exceeding $5 billion. Another factor: AMD's chips passed some performance milestones with customers, Su said. We believe Su's AI roadmap — outlined at its AI event earlier this month — will lead to significant sales growth in 2025 and thereafter. Quarterly commentary Sales in AMD's all-important data-center segment came in $3.55 billion, exceeding estimates and more than doubling year over year.

Analysts told BI it points to continued AI chip growth in the short to medium term. ASML sells large lithography machines — which print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers — to chip manufacturers, including TSMC, Samsung, and Intel. Its customers include Nvidia, the GPU designer spearheading the AI chip boom, along with AMD and Qualcomm. This makes TSMC a good bellwether for AI chip demand. While a slowdown at ASML might suggest some caution, the bigger picture still points to a continued surge in AI demand.
