She expressed perfectly reasonable skepticism when her sons, Adam, 39, and Andy, 34, suggested renting an “overlanding” vehicle for a week-long backcountry adventure through Colorado and Utah to celebrate their dad’s 70th birthday. According to Adam, they “really had to sell her on being able to see these untouched landscapes” and reassure her that they’d have a whole team behind them, with route-planning and emergency satellite communications.
