AdvertisementMy menstrual bleeding was abnormal, so I went to my doctor, thinking I was in perimenopause. Four months ago, I went in to see my primary care doctor because my menstrual bleeding was abnormal. There, I learned the basics about cramps, the difference between pads and tampons, and the non-stop fun that awaited me with my changing body. Reading a list of symptoms — bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, longer periods — felt like reading a page of my journal for the last few years. Other perimenopausal symptoms might be approaching, but I'm no longer afraid to talk about them or seek answers when something feels off.

In states where tensions have long boiled over reproductive rights, family planning experts say women face mounting barriers to getting birth control. In June, Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have enshrined a national right to birth control into law. States have been left to decide if they will protect access to birth control. The Right Time initiative is part of Michelle Trupiano's work at Missouri Family Health Council that reduces costs and helps Missourians to obtain birth control. She works at a family planning clinic that is benefiting from Title X funding, which means right now, uninsured patients can get birth control through the clinic.

All had locally advanced cervical cancer, although none had tumors that had spread to other organs. This discovery led to the development of an HPV vaccine that can help prevent cervical cancer in women. Brawley stressed the importance of routine cervical screening as advanced-stage cervical cancer rises among White and Black women in the US. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cervical cancer screenings typically test for signs of HPV that can cause cell changes on the cervix. “Of the 4,400 deaths from cervical cancer, none of them get screened every year.”Chemotherapy to treat cervical cancer can come with unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting and hair loss, Brawley noted.

In Jesenik, a Czech town across the border that was inundated on Sunday, a clean-up was starting after waters receded to show damaged cars and debris on the streets. Flooded parts of the northeastern Czech city of Ostrava forced the closures of a power plant supplying heat and hot water to the city as well as two chemical plants. State news agency PAP reported five deaths in Poland, and in the Czech Republic one person died, a police official said. Slovakia’s capital Bratislava and the Hungarian capital Budapest were both preparing for possible flooding as the River Danube rose.

A renewed spotlight on protecting access to birth control may not help women who are already struggling to find affordable contraception in some states with the strictest abortion laws. Few community clinics have the amount of money needed to cover birth control each month, McCollum said. But over-the-counter birth control pills haven’t reached many women in rural areas. Because of the Texas policy change an estimated one-quarter of family planning clinics in the state closed by 2013. “If someone does not have insurance, we can pay for their visit and their birth control method,” McCollum said.

CNN —When she leaves Barbie Land for the real world, Barbie must keep up with her regular health maintenance, which includes seeing her gynecologist. Those examples and others inspired the researchers to look into the “Barbie” effect on interest in women’s reproductive health. But the authors noted that an increase in seeking gynecologic care may not be accurately captured in search trends. It’s possible that the searches were from people who don’t need gynecologic care, the authors note in the study. “I feel like (the scene) starts the conversation — anything that starts the conversation about reproductive health tends to cause folks to want to explore that and go in and take a look at what they should be doing about their own health,” Irobunda said.

Eli Lilly presented the new data from the trials at the American Diabetes Association's 84th Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Florida, on Friday. An estimated 80 million patients in the U.S. experience the disease, Eli Lilly said in a press release. Disease resolution for OSA is defined as a patient having fewer than five AHI events per hour, according to Eli Lilly. Eli Lilly on Friday reiterated that Zepbound met the main goal of the trial, which was reducing AHI events. Eli Lilly previously announced that the FDA granted Zepbound "fast track designation" for patients with moderate-to-severe OSA and obesity.

Most cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus or HPV, and screening for HPV can help identify women who may be at risk of developing cervical cancer. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for cervical cancer with cervical cytology every three years for women ages 21 to 29. “Most cervical cancers are found in people who have never had a cervical cancer screening test or who have not had one recently. Screening for cervical cancer remains important because early cases often may not have signs or symptoms. Cervical cancer is treated in many ways, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

But almost all postpartum moms, celebrity or not, face an unspoken mandate to “bounce back” to their pre-baby body. An injection pen of Zepbound, Eli Lilly’s weight loss drug, is displayed in New York City, U.S., December 11, 2023. Eli Lilly on Wednesday said its highly popular weight loss drug Zepbound showed the potential to treat patients with the most common sleep-related breathing disorder in two late-stage clinical trials. Zepbound was more effective than a placebo at reducing the severity of obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, in patients with obesity after a year, according to preliminary data from both trials. Eli Lilly previously announced that the FDA granted Zepbound "fast track designation" for patients with moderate-to-severe OSA and obesity. Zepbound has slipped into shortages since receiving approval in the U.S. for weight management in November.

CNN —Zepbound, a popular weight loss drug, also seems to help people with obstructive sleep apnea, drugmaker Eli Lilly said Wednesday. Based on results from trials in people with sleep apnea, the company said it plans to submit the material to the US Food and Drug Administration to potentially expand the use of Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder that causes people to briefly stop breathing while they are sleeping, sometimes several times an hour. While people are more at risk for obstructive sleep apnea as they get older, it often develops when people gain weight and have overweight or obesity. Some doctors have been prescribing the weekly injection off label to people with obstructive sleep apnea, and Lilly has been testing the drug for obstructive sleep apnea since June 2022.

Eli Lilly said it plans to ask U.S. regulators to expand Zepbound's label to include obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, later this year. Shares of Eli Lilly have ridden the GLP-1 craze to new heights over the past few years. The current standard of care for obstructive sleep apnea is positive airway pressure, or PAP, machines, which help keep patients' airways open while they sleep. Analysts projected obstructive sleep apnea revenue of $3 billion. An injection pen of Zepbound, Eli Lilly’s weight loss drug, is displayed in New York City on Dec. 11, 2023.

Now, a report from the American Cancer Society projects that by 2050, the number of people with cancer could rise 77%. Overall, the top 10 cancer types in both men and women accounted for more than 60% of newly diagnosed cancer cases and cancer deaths, according to the report. Lung cancer was also the leading cause of cancer deaths, followed by colorectal, liver, breast in women, stomach, pancreatic, esophagus, prostate, cervical and leukemia. “While we do see lung cancers that are not related to smoking, the number one cause of lung cancer is smoking. “Interestingly, pollution and other airborne environmental exposures probably increase the risk of lung cancer in many parts of the world.
