Laurel Oztemel was ready for a change of scene when she happened across Hudson, New York, nearly a decade ago.

By 2014, she was living in Connecticut, raising two sons on the verge of graduating high school.
Then, later that year, friends who had been living in Hudson invited her to spend the day at their place for the first time.
