Mitt Romney won more than 80% in Forsyth in 2012, but Trump won just two-thirds of the vote there eight years later. In 2020, Joe Biden won this county by only 4 points over Trump, while Hillary Clinton carried it by 13 points in 2016. While Trump won it by 3 points in 2016, Biden won Maricopa by 2 points four years later. And that Democratic gain helped the party flip Wisconsin in 2020, given that Biden won the state by just 20,000 votes.

The courting of celebrity endorsements is a long-running tradition in presidential politics and one that Democrats generally win. Swift criticized the fake posting, saying it was part of the reason she is backing Harris’ campaign. Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

State Supreme Court Justice-elect Janet Protasiewicz won a double-digit victory on a platform that was explicitly built on abortion rights. The first signs that midterms would be upended by abortion came in Nebraska and Kansas, the latter of which was the first state to vote on abortion rights after Dobbs. Kansas voters ended up rejecting an amendment that would have eliminated the right to abortion from the state constitution. By the end of November, abortion rights advocates went six for six in ballot measures that either enshrined protections into law or stopped further limitations — an incredible streak that reversed years of losses.
