India may be the most populous country in the world, but its labor force continues to lag behind China's, according to Oxford Economics. Even though India has the world's largest population, its labor force participation is only at 51%, trailing China by 25 percentage points. "Although the rate will increase over time, our current projections suggest India's labor force will remain smaller than China's until the late 2040s," Oxford said in a report last week. Although a larger proportion of India's population is of working age, those between the ages of 15 and 64 only make up 51% of the country's labor force, compared to 76% in China. China's population would have dipped to 1.1 billion by then, the report said.

AI can pick private equity firms to back better than many investors, per an Oxford study. Artificial intelligence can pick out top-performing private equity (PE) funds better than many institutional investors, according to research from the University of Oxford. Researchers trained an AI model to identify high-performing PE funds by reading 400 fundraising prospectuses and factoring in long sections that are often overlooked by investors, for a study by the Saïd Business School. Ludovic Phalippou, the lead researcher and a professor of financial economics at Oxford Saïd. But only a limited number of investors have the resources to take advantage of AI, so Phalippou expects to see consultants add it to their services.

London CNN —Oxford University will remove the Sackler name from its buildings following a review of its relationship with the family that recently expressed regret for its role in the US opioid crisis. The 900-year old university said in a statement that it would remove the Sackler name from some of its most prominent landmarks, including parts of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology and the Bodleian Library. The university said the decision had “the full support of the Sackler family,” adding that it would keep the Sackler name on two donor boards “for the purposes of historical recording of donations to the university.”The Sackler Trust did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment. Oxford said in its statement that it had not received any new donations from the Sackler family or its charitable trusts since January 2019. In March, a US judge approved a $6 billion settlement paid by the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma to several US states as well as victims of the opioid crisis.
A letter from tech heavyweights and researchers urging caution about AI should serve as a warning. To help address the fears, companies must set rules and be open how they use AI, execs told Insider. If you ask a group of high-profile tech leaders and researchers, they'll answer a firm "yes." That could involve companies coming up with standards and declaring how they are using or plan to use AI, business leaders told Insider. Bricker said business leaders need to work on improving the rules around AI systems and processes.
New York CNN —News publishers are getting in on the TikTok trend. That’s according to a brand new survey published Wednesday evening by the Reuters Institute and University of Oxford. The survey found that, from a global standpoint, about half of the world’s top newsrooms are now regularly posting on the ByteDance-owned app. The survey found that the rates of TikTok usage among news publishers is highest in Western Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America. “If you look at some of the storytelling going on TikTok, it is really different,” Newman told CNN.
"Goblin mode" is Oxford English Dictionary's word of the year after going viral in February. Regarding "goblin mode," it wrote that it's "a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations." The headline, falsely attributed to Bollywood news site Pinkvilla, incorrectly quoted actress and model Julia Fox as saying that her ex Kanye West "didn't like when I went goblin mode," something she never said. "The term then rose in popularity over the months following as Covid lockdown restrictions eased in many countries and people ventured out of their homes more regularly," Oxford wrote about "goblin mode." But while "metaverse" couldn't top "goblin mode," maybe Zuckerberg can take solace that it gained enough traction to be in the running this year.
Also, the immune response measured in the blood was weaker than that from a shot-in-the-arm vaccination. India's health minister last month approved Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 nasal spray vaccine while China's CanSino Biologics Inc (6185.HK) last month won emergency approval by the country's drug regulator for an inhaled version of its COVID-19 vaccine. The British trial enrolled 30 previously unvaccinated participants as well as 12 volunteers, who had previously received a standard two-dose vaccine course by injection. "The nasal spray did not perform as well in this study as we had hoped," said Sandy Douglas, chief investigator of the trial at Oxford University's Jenner Institute. No serious adverse events or safety concerns were reported during the trial, which was funded by AstraZeneca, according to the statement.
