Congressional Republicans acknowledge that Vance hasn’t necessarily developed longstanding relationships on Capitol Hill during his abbreviated time in Washington. His coattails turned a 49-51 senate to a 53-47 senate,” Vance wrote on X on Wednesday. The three developed a bond that predates the campaign and has carried into the early days of Trump’s transition. But when you look at the effectiveness of JD in the campaign, there’s no better surrogate for President Trump’s agenda,” the adviser said. “In JD’s view, his role of VP is to take on any issue that President Trump would like him to take on,” the person close to Vance told CNN.

Of course, these basic rules of political decorum are ones Donald Trump has rarely followed. He’s been accumulating political capital, and his victory only gives him an opening to accumulate more ... if he chooses to. On some level, I accept the notion that one person’s revenge is another person’s “reform,” so I’m sure Trump could argue he’s appointing reformists. What will ultimately matter is whether these folks can govern like reformers or end up simply as conduits for Trump’s revenge. Here’s the political problem Trump is creating for himself: He’s taking full ownership of the entire bureaucracy now.

But it also complicated the diplomatic dance leaders attending the G20 summit must partake in as they navigate the complex geopolitical dynamics of the bloc. Lavrov attended the G20 in place of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who faced questions about whether he could be arrested for war crimes on international soil. In his remarks at the close of the summit, Lavrov also hailed the German government’s refusal to send Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine as a “responsible stance,” TASS reported. There had been hope among western officials of a strong statement denouncing Russia’s invasion at the conclusion of the summit. American officials were unsurprised to learn Moscow had updated its nuclear doctrine following Biden’s decision on long-range missiles.

The idea is to help Ukraine hold on to Kursk for as long as possible, the official said. : Biden’s decision comes at one of the most perilous moments for Ukraine in a war that has raged for nearly 1,000 days. Thousands of North Korean troops have been deployed to support Moscow’s effort in Kursk, while Russian troops are making significant gains on the eastern frontlines in Ukraine. The shift in policy also comes as Biden prepares to make way for President-elect Donald Trump. Trump has said he could settle the war in one day, without saying how he would do so.

Trump has said he wants to lower gas prices — which currently average $3.07 per gallon — to below $2 a gallon. But the American oil industry is already booming and increasing output doesn’t mean gas prices will drop. After oil prices shot up in 2022 in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions on Russian oil imposed by western countries, major oil companies reported record profits. But are we going to increase oil production by another 50%? OPEC+, a group of leading oil-producing countries, even delayed plans to increase production because of concerns about excess supply.

It was just one example of Trump casting a long shadow over a pair of world leader summits taking place in South America this week. Yet to many involved in the discussions, the episode suggested the contention that colored world leader summits during Trump’s first presidency may be poised to return. “You can already see the Trump effect taking hold,” one Western diplomat said as the summit was getting underway. “Trump will only cause more divisions, and more divisions mean less leverage and less influence,” the official went on. “President Biden is that president, he will be handing off power in January, and it will be up to a new administration to decide what to do with it.”

CNN —A mummified ice age cub from Siberia is the first known mummy of a sabre-toothed cat, and its discovery is generating ripples of excitement among paleontologists. A, B and C reveal views of the mummified Homotherium latidens specimen: A is a thumb claw; B a second digit claw; and С a plantar view. However, the mummy also showed that sabre-toothed cubs differed dramatically from modern lion cubs of a similar age, Lopatin said. Its coat was darker, and its ears were smaller than those of lion cubs; it had longer forelimbs, a larger mouth opening and a more massive neck. Its paw is also more circular than that of a lion cub; in fact, its shape more closely resembles the paw of a bear, Tseng added.

Not all of Trump’s picks are causing uproar. But in a conventional administration, controversies raging around at least four key Cabinet picks would be seen as a disaster. The president-elect’s son explains the planGaetz and several other Trump picks have caused consternation in some circles given the questions about their qualifications and past behavior. And by the way, I do believe that President Trump has the ability to pick some really, really good people. We've seen what they've done to President Trump, we've seen the attacks that they continue to go after him with. That's - that’s being taken completely out of context. And President Trump hasn't been the one that weaponized the DOJ to go after his political enemies. I think that's a pretty controversial pick, from whatever pronoun that he or he - he or she decides to use.

Trump said he plans to change the Affordable Care Act, which provides healthcare for 45 million Americans. AdvertisementDonald Trump's return to the Oval Office could mean changes to Americans' healthcare coverage, based on his previous comments and actions while president. AdvertisementAs president, he will also have the power to influence America's healthcare landscape, including insurance coverage, drug price negotiations, government health and safety regulations, and reproductive healthcare access. Any changes to Medicaid and Medicare under Trump could also cause those with ACA insurance see a reduction in their care options. This could mean some Americans on ACA plans could face higher out-of-pocket costs and fewer in-network care options.

As an experienced chef and cooking instructor, I love this take on twice-baked potatoes. Here's my go-to recipe for twice-baked potatoes with mascarpone and chives. Alissa FitzgeraldRusset potatoes mash beautifully and retain a great shape when the insides are scooped out thanks to their thicker skin. Additionally, this recipe uses medium-sized potatoes since cutting these beauties in half isn't as visually appealing as stuffing them whole. Alissa FitzgeraldThe filling for these twice-baked potatoes has two notable tweaks from many classic recipes — there's no added milk, and it calls for mascarpone instead of sour cream.

Inflation is drifting down in fits and starts, and so are restaurant menu prices. Diners are more likely to notice stabilizing menu prices at quick-service restaurants than at sit-down ones. But the rate at which all eateries changed their menu prices between the second and third quarters this year plummeted by 26%, the company said. Quick-service restaurants have benefited from slower growth in labor costs, Square found. The company estimates annual inflation faced by quick-service operators at 3.6% as of September, versus 4.3% for restaurants with table service.

Price growth ticked higher in October as voters began casting ballots in a presidential election in which economic concerns played a big role. The consumer price index climbed to 2.6% last month since the same time last year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. Stock futures turned higher, while traders bid up the price of government bonds. All-important shelter costs rose 0.4% from September to October, accounting for over half the monthly gains, the BLS said. Over the past four years, consumer prices have cumulatively increased about 20%, with the costs of many other goods and services rising even faster.

Former Vice President Mike Pence was, for most of their four years together, a loyal partner who helped smooth Trump’s dealings with establishment Republicans and evangelical conservatives. “It compresses things,” said Joel Goldstein, a vice presidential scholar and professor emeritus at Saint Louis University. At one point, polling showed him to be one of the least-liked vice presidential candidates over the last 30 years. Biden in 2020 did not gain ground across the country in as large a percentage of counties as Trump did in 2024. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that the two would meet at 11 a.m. at Biden’s invitation, adding that additional details about the meeting will be released. Incoming first lady Melania Trump has also been invited to the White House to meet with first lady Jill Biden, an official in the East Wing told CNN, though it is unclear when that might happen. Trump did not host Biden in 2020, however, as he fought the election results based on falsehoods about voter fraud.
