Houston, a two-time Grammy winner who sang backup for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley, passed away at her home Monday morning in New Jersey, according to her daughter-in-law Pat Houston. May she rest in peace, alongside her daughter, Whitney and granddaughter Bobbi Kristina and other cherished family members.”Whitney Houston and Cissy Houston at the Annual People's Choice Awards in 1993. CNN —Cissy Houston, Grammy-winning singer and mother of Whitney Houston, has died, according to Gwendolyn Quinn, a representative for The Estate of Whitney E. Houston. “Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. Whitney Houston died in 2012 at the age of 48. Cissy Houston was also the mother of sons Gary and Michael and the grandmother of her several grandchildren, according to her biography. Her granddaughter Bobbie Kristina Brown, died three years after her mother Whitney at the age of 22.

Carnochan has been my therapist for over a decade, a privilege for which I am grateful on two accounts. First, the surging national demand for therapy has so outstripped supply that it can be hard to find a good therapist anywhere, but especially in San Francisco. Second, working with Carnochan has been so healing that I have come to see psychotherapy as a beautiful profession and Carnochan as its beau idéal — deeply learned, emotionally present and capable of moving in a single conversation from D. W. Winnicott’s theory of the false self to Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay,” from infinity in the Lotus Sutra to the ecstasies of backcountry skiing. I knew Carnochan did some other form of talking to people one on one — coaching, that is — because I once told him that I worried about money and career. Carnochan responded by mentioning that he sometimes helped company executives on professional matters and could work with me in the same spirit.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Fans of the soulful sounds of Detroit’s Motown and Memphis’ Stax Records will be able to enjoy music from both brands in the same place if they watch and listen to a free, online show streaming during Black History Month in February. Registration has begun for “Stax Meets Motown,” which features musicians from Stax Music Academy playing hits from both of the influential soul and R&B music labels. “Think Glee meets Grease meets Fame meets Hairspray, all with classic 1960s soul music,” Stax said in the release. Stax Music Academy began these virtual presentations in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This year’s show is a lively comparison of Stax and Motown,” said Stax Music Academy Executive Director Isaac Daniel.

CNN —Jann Wenner, co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine, has been removed from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s board after facing widespread criticism for controversial comments made in a New York Times interview published Friday about female and Black musicians. “Jann Wenner has been removed from the board of directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation,” Joel Peresman, the president and chief executive of the foundation, told the New York Times in a statement Saturday. CNN has reached out to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for comment. In the interview, he spoke about his decision to not include interviews with women and Black artists, and his remarks on the topic were widely criticized. He was inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as an individual in 2004, and is a co-founder of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

My family has a Thanksgiving tradition. Countless people who don’t — or can’t (or both) — eat traditional Thanksgiving food such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie will be the butt of the joke when families gather around the table on Thursday.
