London CNN —British members of parliament have voted to legalize assisted dying, approving a contentious proposal that would make the United Kingdom one of a small handful of nations to allow terminally ill people to end their lives. The bill must still clear the House of Lords and parliamentary committees, but Friday’s vote marked the most important hurdle. Canada, New Zealand, Spain and most of Australia allow assisted dying in some form, as do several US states including Oregon, Washington and California. MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they can support either side according to their conscience, with no political ramifications. Polling indicates that a comfortable majority of the public supports assisted dying.

London Reuters —The British Museum said on Wednesday it would receive 1,700 pieces of world-renowned Chinese ceramics worth around 1 billion pounds ($1.27 billion), in the largest donation in its nearly 300-year history. The collection, which has been on loan to the British Museum since 2009, has been donated by the Percival David Foundation. The Trustees of the British Museum“This is the largest bequest to the British Museum in our long history,” said George Osborne, chair of the British Museum. “It’s a real vote of confidence in our future.”Thanks to the donation, the British Museum said it would hold one of the most important collections of Chinese ceramics of any public institution outside the Chinese-speaking world, numbering 10,000 objects. CNN —Several non-credible bomb threats that briefly disrupted voting at two Georgia polling places originated from Russia, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters Tuesday. “Anything that can get us to fight amongst ourselves - they can count that as a victory.”Raffensperger, a Republican, did not elaborate on how exactly state officials determined the bomb threats came from Russia. The non-credible threats caused the temporary closure of polling places at the Etris Community Center and Gullatt Elementary in Union City, just outside of Atlanta, according to Fulton County Police. An officer told him and other voters they couldn’t enter the site to vote because of a bomb threat. “They had to remove all the workers, they couldn’t let anyone in until they assessed the threats,” said Osborne.

CNN —A Pennsylvania woman who had recently completed her breast cancer treatment says she couldn’t believe her eyes after scratching off a winning $5 million ticket, according to lottery officials. Donna Osborne, 75, told Pennsylvania Lottery officials that she was at an airport with her daughter to visit family in Florida when their flight got delayed, according to a Pennsylvania Lottery news release. “It was delayed so many times, I decided to go home,” said Osborne, according to the release. She picked the winning ticket, which was part of a Pennsylvania Lottery scratch-off game called MONOPOLY Own It All, at a Speedway gas station in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She described her win as bittersweet following her recent completion of breast cancer radiation treatment, according to the Pennsylvania Lottery.
