The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday confirmed highly pathogenic form of bird flu in a person in Oregon. All the cases were farm workers who had known contact with infected animals, except for one person in Missouri. Last month, the H5N1 bird flu was confirmed in a pig on a backyard farm in Oregon, the first detection of the virus in swine in the country. The CDC has instructed that farm workers who have been exposed to animals with bird flu should be tested even if they do not have symptoms. Since 2022, the virus has wiped out more than 100 million poultry birds in the nation’s worst-ever bird flu outbreak.

Fires were set at three ballot boxes in the area in the past three weeks. An “incendiary device” found attached to the side of a ballot drop box in Portland, Oregon, early Monday damaged ballots, but most were unaffected because of fire suppressant installed in the ballot box. Investigators have also linked the two incidents to a third ballot box fire on October 8, also in Vancouver, which is just across the Columbia River from Portland. All ballot boxes in Multnomah and Clark counties – where Portland and Vancouver are located, respectively – have fire suppressant installed, election officials said at a news conference Monday. In Clark County, Washington, 60% of the ballots received are from ballot drop boxes and 40% are received by mail, according to Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey.

But then there was a surge in overdoses and public backlash over open-air drug use. In February 2021, Oregon decriminalized possession of small amounts of all drugs, via a ballot initiative known as Measure 110. The idea was to treat addiction as a public health problem, based on overwhelming evidence that jailing people for having small amounts of drugs for personal use is both ineffective and counterproductive. This spike was far greater than the 14 percent rise in the nation’s overall overdose deaths during the same period. Although Measure 110 passed with nearly 59 percent support, many Oregon voters are now calling for drugs to be recriminalized, citing these worsening conditions. But rampant misinformation — often being spread for political gain — means that the legislature is likely to return to its old-school drug war approach.

(AP) — An Oregon jury awarded $85 million Tuesday to nine victims of wildfires that ravaged the state in 2020, the latest verdict in a series of legal proceedings that are expected to put the utility PacifiCorp on the hook for billions of dollars over its liability for the deadly blazes. “The 2020 wildfires were undeniably tragic,” it said. “PacifiCorp has settled and will continue to settle all reasonable claims for actual damages under Oregon law. Three people were killed when a power line fell on a car in Portland, Ore., Wednesday morning as parts of the Northwest continued to suffer from a brutal weather pattern this week, officials said. In one fatal episode, Rick Graves, a spokesman for Portland Fire and Rescue, said that a tree branch had knocked the power line onto an S.U.V. in Portland. The three occupants who died, two adults and a teenager, are believed to have been electrocuted when they got out of the vehicle, the spokesman said. A baby who had been in the vehicle survived, and was taken to the hospital for evaluation, he added.
