The same Chinese brokers who were laundering fentanyl proceeds were now heavily involved in marijuana trafficking across the U.S. as well. Over the past decade, Chinese organized crime groups in the U.S. quietly became the dominant money launderers for Mexican cartels. Since 2023, federal prosecutors have charged at least 31 people linked to Chinese groups accused of laundering cartel drug money. In the ensuing months, the team began to understand for the first time how the Chinese became the Mexican cartels’ go-to money launderers. The Chinese money brokers then arrange for the cartels to receive the equivalent amount in pesos or cryptocurrency in Mexico.

The International Energy Agency recently reported that 2021 saw energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rise to their highest level in history. BP on Tuesday appointed Kate Thomson as interim chief financial officer to take the place of Murray Auchincloss who became interim CEO last week. The reshuffle follows the abrupt departure of CEO Bernard Looney last week after he did not fully disclose past relationships with colleagues. Thomson, who joined BP nearly 20 years ago, previously headed the finances of the energy giant's oil and gas production and operations division. Auchincloss, 52, worked closely with Looney in devising BP's energy transition strategy and has advocated a focus on high-return assets to finance the transition, according to two company sources.

Pompeo was also a target of the Iranian assassination plot, according to a federal law enforcement source familiar with the investigation and a source close to Pompeo. Seraj “has been involved in failed IRGC-IO operations in Asia and in intelligence operations targeting U.S. citizens,” it said. “Seraj previously led the IRGC-IO Special Operations Division, which is focused on special activity against Israel, where he was responsible for a series of failed operations targeting Israeli nationals,” it added.

An ex-Google recruiter says the company laid staff off like they were "just a number." Louise Coyne told Insider she was on paid leave when CEO Sundar Pichai announced Google was laying off 12,000 workers, or around 6.4% of its workforce, on January 20. "We've just left these people completely in the dark," Coyne told Insider. One software engineer who had been at Google for less than six months told Insider that the layoffs were a "rude awakening." He said he woke up when a colleague rang him to say he couldn't message him on Google's internal chat.

Medly, a pharmacy startup that took off in the pandemic, laid off over half its staff in August. Natalia Rzeszutek first started using Medly three years ago, relying on the pharmacy startup to deliver her medications for epilepsy. Unbeknownst to her, many other patients, and its own employees, Medly had been approaching this collapse for months. But behind the scenes, the pharmacy startup was on the brink of imploding. Many said they'd repeatedly called their local Medly pharmacy to get their prescriptions filled but never received a response.
