India accuses Samsung, Xiaomi of colluding with Amazon, Flipkart
  + stars: | 2024-09-15 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Samsung, Xiaomi and other smartphone companies colluded with Amazon and Walmart's Flipkart to exclusively launch products on the e-commerce firms' Indian websites in breach of antitrust laws, according to regulatory reports seen by Reuters. In Flipkart's case, a 1,696-page CCI report said the Indian units of Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Vivo, Lenovo and Realme conducted similar practices. Siva Prasad wrote in the Amazon and Flipkart reports, in identical findings. Amazon, Flipkart and the CCI did not respond, and have not so far commented on the reports' findings. Both the CCI reports said that during investigations Amazon and Flipkart "deliberately downplayed" allegations of exclusive launches, but officials found the practice was "rampant".

CNN —Apple’s smartphone sales tumbled 10% last quarter, according to market research firm IDC, as sales in China fell sharply. Apple took the crown last year – but only for one quarter, as Samsung took the spot back. Samsung occupied about 20.8% of market share (or 60.1 million shipments) during the quarter, followed by Apple with 17.3% (50.1 million shipments). China remains an important market for Apple as it is the largest market behind the US. “As the overall smartphone market recovers this year, with a strong focus on AI, Samsung is in good position to grow further this year,” she added.

The new silicon includes Qualcomm's X Elite chip for PCs and laptops and the Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for high-end Android phones. The speed at which a smartphone chip processes AI models could represent a new feature battleground between high-end Android phones from companies such as Asus, Sony and OnePlus versus Apple's iPhones, which are also getting new AI features on an annual basis. Now, Qualcomm said, its smartphone chip can handle the bigger AI models used in generative AI — as many as 10 billion parameters. That's still less than some of the biggest AI models, such as OpenAI's GPT3, which has about 175 billion parameters. Qualcomm executives said these kinds of AI models can run on devices if the chips are fast enough and equipped with enough memory.

U.K.-based consumer tech company Nothing is setting its sights on the U.S., with ambitions of taking on Apple's iPhone. The startup, the hardware venture of Carl Pei — co-founder of Chinese mobile phone maker OnePlus — is in early conversations with American carriers about launching a new smartphone in the U.S., Pei told CNBC, without naming any of the carriers. In July, Nothing launched Phone (1), a mid-range device with a design, price and specs similar to Apple's entry-level iPhone SE. "Now we are in discussions with some carriers in the U.S. to potentially launch a future product there," said the Chinese-Swedish entrepreneur. And if we launch our smartphones there, I'm sure we could obtain significant growth," he said.
