Yet some adult lifestyle factors still appeared to be linked with improved cognitive performance and slower aging of the brain. “We are now looking into whether different constellations of brain ageing features are driven by particular subsets of risk factors.”As a researcher of the aging brain, Dr. Richard Isaacson said, the new paper spoke to him. There is a robust body of research on key differences in lifestyle that may contribute to differences in an aging brain. Adding a heart-healthy diet to your routine also can help slow brain aging and reduce dementia risk. “Those things may not exactly cause Alzheimer’s, but it can fast forward cognitive aging and fast forward cognitive decline.

On the cusp of her 50th birthday, aging expert Debra Whitman had questions. CNN: What else contributes to healthy aging? We, as a country, need to prepare for an aging population so that everyone can live a long and healthy life. Author and aging expert Debra Whitman speaks at CareFest at UCLA on November 2, 2023. Trump defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, and Republicans claimed a majority of the Senate in elections this week. "We know kind of where the world is headed in a Trump environment because we've seen it before," said Jeffrey Solomon, president of TD Cowen, on CNBC's "Money Movers" Wednesday. One M&A advisor, who also spoke to CNBC anonymously, noted that Trump's disdain for Big Tech companies — historically active deal-makers — might keep them on the sidelines. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. That advisor noted that smaller banks had been getting gobbled up for "some time," but that the pace and size of those acquisitions would likely ramp up under a Trump presidency.

The question is how worried should people be about these endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as phthalates, BPA or bisphenol A, and brominated flame retardants? Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are not produced by the human body but influence the way your hormones function, Bloom said. CNN reached out to the National Pest Management Association and the Personal Care Products Council for comment. Gradually replacing personal care products one at a time as you use up individual products is a great place to start, she said. “But personal care products is one thing where I think folks have a lot of autonomy and what they’re purchasing within reason.”

Four months later, and before we underwent a fourth embryo transfer, we found out we were pregnant naturally. The Summary Four new presumed cases of bird flu in farmworkers in Washington state bring the U.S. total to 31. Washington is the sixth state to report human cases of bird flu, which has spread rampantly in wild birds, poultry and cattle. Six health workers exposed to the patient reported respiratory symptoms. Webby said the virus’ spread in cows for the past 10 months has raised experts’ level of concern because cows are mammals and interact with humans frequently. Itle said cases in poultry were not unexpected in Washington state, because migrating birds passed through during summer and early fall.

How pregnancy changes the brain

CNN —Researchers have created one of the first comprehensive maps of how the brain changes throughout pregnancy, substantially improving upon understanding of an understudied field. What brain changes mean for parentsThe functional implications these brain changes may have for birthing parents have yet to be determined, said Dr. Elseline Hoekzema, head of the Pregnancy and the Brain Lab at Amsterdam University Medical Center, via email. However, some of Hoekzema’s previous work has indicated associations between pregnancy-related brain changes and the ways a birthing parent’s brain and body respond and bond to infants’ cues, Hoekzema added. These findings are also in line with animal studies showing brain changes that were critical for the onset and continuation of maternal care. “Of the 50,000 brain imaging articles published in the last 30 years, less than half of 1% focus on health factors unique to women, like pregnancy.

CNN —Tiny plastic shards and fibers were found in the nose tissue of human cadavers, according to a small new study. The threads and microplastic pieces were discovered in the olfactory bulb, the part of the nose responsible for detecting odors that sits at the base of the brain. Microplastics are polymer fragments that can range from less than 0.2 inch (5 millimeters) down to 1/25,000th of an inch (1 micrometer). However, an April 2023 study found that microplastics made of polypropylene appeared to exacerbate the advance of breast cancer. The nose is one of many ways through which microplastics can enter the body, experts say.

Online platforms reflect a growing demand for menopause care like hormone-replacement therapy. These studies aim to develop a better understanding of women's menopause symptoms like depression, insomnia, and hot flashes, with the goal of developing more helpful treatments. To further address the need for perimenopause and menopause research and medical care, Congress introduced in May the bipartisan Advancing Menopause Care and Mid-Life Women's Health Act. After roughly a year of treatment for her menopause symptoms, Miller is flourishing. But more than half the global population isn’t eating enough of these and five other nutrients also crucial for human health, according to a new study. More than 5 billion people don’t consume enough iodine, vitamin E or calcium, found the study published August 29 in the journal The Lancet Global Health. Billions of people don’t consume enough of at least seven micronutrients present in hundreds of foods, according to a new study. For these reasons, the research team estimated the prevalence of inadequate intakes of 15 micronutrients among 185 countries, or 99.3% of the population. “Therefore, iodine might be the only nutrient for which inadequate intake from food is largely overestimated,” the authors said, referring to their findings.

The findings bring the phenomenon — and the controversy — of the latest new and powerful weight loss drugs to the youngest age group yet. The new trial looked at liraglutide, the active ingredient used in two of Novo Nordisk’s older GLP-1 drugs: Saxenda, a weight loss drug, and Victoza, a diabetes drug. So instead of looking at overall weight loss like in adult studies, they decided to focus more on BMI, which takes into account both weight and height. A spokesperson for Novo Nordisk said that it has submitted an application to the Food and Drug Administration to expand the approval of liraglutide for weight loss in children ages 6 to 11.
