Paris CNN —It’s the final day of the Summer Olympics and the USA and China have tied in the overall gold medal rankings from these 2024 Summer Olympics. While Team USA is far ahead in the total medal rankings with 126 in Paris, it went into the last competition of the Games trailing China in the gold medal race by one. The Asian nation finished with 40 gold medals, and the US had 39 entering the final event – the women’s basketball gold medal game between Team USA and France. Team USA would win that game in dramatic circumstances, leading to a tie in the gold medal standings. In 2021, Team USA took the overall gold medal race by one, with 39 to China’s 38.

Those include two pro-secession Catalan parties who led the unsuccessful 2017 breakaway attempt and who now find themselves holding the key votes in Parliament that Sánchez requires. They have made an amnesty law as a prerequisite for supporting Sánchez. “Pedro Sánchez needs the amnesty law to pass so he can get the four votes he is lacking,” Nebrera told the AP. Spain granted a sweeping amnesty during its transition back to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. But legal experts are divided over the constitutionality of an amnesty for the Catalan separatists.

[1/6] Unionist supporters protest against amnesty of separatist leaders and activists involved in the 2017 failed independence drive at Passeig de Gracia in Barcelona, Spain, October 8, 2023. Pedro Sanchez needs the support of Catalan separatist parties Junts and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, which want the unpopular amnesty in exchange for votes in parliament. An amnesty would put the government above democracy and the rule of law," said Javier Tapia, 55, a chemicals worker. The amnesty could potentially cover more than 1,400 people involved in the independence bid that came to a head in 2017, pro-separatist Catalan group Omnium estimates. Around 70% of respondents - 59% of them Socialist supporters – said they were against the idea of an amnesty in a poll in mid-September.

Mandatory Credit: Eric Bolte-USA TODAY SportsAugust 8 - Japan's Nao Hibino ended a four-year title drought Monday with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of No. 4 seed and home favorite Linda Noskova at the Livesport Prague Open in the Czech Republic. After taking the opening set rather easily, Keys needed nine match points to put Williams away. "You have to find that balance between playing risky, aggressive, but not too risky, not too much, because then (Swiatek's) not going to give you many points," Pliskova said.

Leitao makes history with Portugal's first gold

GLASGOW, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Iuri Leitao made history when he claimed Portugal's first ever world title in track cycling by winning the men's omnium event in Glasgow on Sunday. With a comfortable cushion to take into the final points race, Leitao stayed out of trouble and held off the challenge of France's two-time omnium world champion Benjamin Thomas. Portugal has a pedigree in road cycling but, with only one velodrome in the country, track cycling is the poor relation. Now we have a lot of young riders so I think we have given a little bit of motivation for them. "And it's really good to be to be a world champion in giving the hope to the new generation."

Ganna beats tech guru Bigham to pursuit gold

For Ineos Grenadiers road powerhouse Ganna, twice the road time trial world champion, it was consolation after Olympic champions Italy lost in the final of the team pursuit to Denmark on Saturday. "Thanks to Dan for an amazing battle in this velodrome," the 27-year-old Ganna said after claiming his seventh track world title, six of them coming in the 4km individual pursuit. Aerodynamics guru Bigham was part of Britain's gold medal-winning team pursuit squad at last year's track worlds and is eyeing next year's Olympics in Paris. He worked with the Denmark team pursuit squad that won the 2020 world title in Berlin in a then world record time. The pair shared a warm embrace after the race with Bigham saying they had a 'mutual respect' for each other's skills.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - The first edition of the combined UCI Cycling World Championships begins in Glasgow on Thursday with 11 days of high-octane action across virtually every discipline. Archibald, whose first ventures in track cycling were at the Glasgow velodrome, will be part of a British track team looking to flex their muscles ahead of the Paris Olympics. Britain were only fifth in the medals table at last year's track world championships in Paris with three golds -- the men's team pursuit, men's omnium and women's points race. Track world championships ahead of an Olympic Games can be cagey meetings, with the big nations sometimes reluctant to play their hands -- although the British team will be airing their cutting-edge Hope-Lotus track bike. Other events at the world championships include indoor cycling and a full para road and track programme.

Aaron Smith, CEO of the National Cannabis Industry Association, speaks during a news conference on the Safe Banking Act outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, Sept. 14, 2022. The Senate banking committee is holding its first-ever hearing Thursday on a bipartisan bill that would allow the cannabis industry to access traditional banking services, which marijuana businesses see as critical to their survival. The meeting, titled Examining Cannabis Banking Challenges of Small Businesses and Workers, will hear testimony from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including Sens. Thursday's hearing will determine next steps in getting the bill to the Senate floor for a vote, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other key lawmakers express support for it. "Without full access to the banking and payments system, legal cannabis businesses are forced to operate in the shadows," said Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who is also chair of the committee.
