CNN —A suspect who was taken into custody in last month’s killing of Detroit synagogue president Samantha Woll has been released, the suspect’s lawyer said Saturday. Still, Woll’s killing has rattled Jewish community members still grappling with Hamas’ deadly October 7 attacks on Israel and the ensuing conflict. Police did not identify the suspect in Woll’s killing. Under Michigan state law, suspects cannot be detained longer than 72 hours without a court hearing. Woll had been her “normal positive and pleasant self” at the wedding prior to her killing, White noted, citing police interviews.

CNN —The annual Twin Cities Marathon has been canceled due to record-breaking heat in Minneapolis and St. Paul, marathon organizers announced Sunday morning. The event, slated to begin at 7 a.m. local time, was expected to draw 300,000 spectators, according to the organizers. “The latest weather forecast update projects record-setting heat conditions that do not allow a safe event for runners, supporters and volunteers,” organizers said in a statement. “Extreme heat conditions can tax both runners and our emergency medical response systems.”The organizers had been monitoring weather conditions for several days as the heat continued to rise, Mahler said. CNN —The student newspaper for Northwestern University said at least three former students of its football program detailed what it described as a pattern of racism from coaches and players. “I didn’t feel like I could be anything other than White,” former player Ramon Diaz Jr. said, according to the paper. Northwestern University announced Monday it had fired longtime head football coach Pat Fitzgerald. The move came after allegations of hazing within the Wildcats football program. The artist, designer and entrepreneur, who has changed his name to Ye, spoke about Floyd’s death during a recent episode of the podcast “Drink Champs.”“I watched the George Floyd documentary that Candace Owens put out. While that’s not legally possible because George Floyd is deceased, Merritt said, there are other legal avenues to pursue, including the Floyd family possibly suing for intentional infliction of emotional distress. “I have put together a working team to investigate [West’s] statements and to investigate the source of those statements,” Merritt said. CNN has reached out to Merritt for comment on the cease-and-desist letter.
