The head of a panel that ruled that the American gymnast Jordan Chiles had to give up her Olympic bronze medal in favor of a Romanian athlete has represented Romania for almost a decade in arbitration cases, documents show. The Romanian athlete, Ana Barbosu, was awarded the bronze medal as a result of the panel’s decision, and Chiles was dropped to fifth place. The result left Chiles brokenhearted: It took away her only individual medal at the Games, and means her appearance on the podium — the first all-Black medals stand at a gymnastics event at the Olympics — is now left with an asterisk. Chiles posted four broken heart emojis on a black background on social media on Saturday after the decision was announced, and later said she was stepping away from social media altogether amid a torrent of racial abuse. The decision to reallocate the medals in the floor exercise outraged U.S. Olympic and gymnastics officials, who have threatened to take their fight to the Swiss courts.

After learning that she might lose the bronze medal she won in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics — the only individual medal she won at these Summer Games — the American gymnast Jordan Chiles took to social media on Saturday and posted four broken heart emojis on a black background. That’s four broken hearts for the four seconds that cost her a bronze medal. The International Olympic Committee confirmed on Sunday that it would strip Chiles of her bronze medal and give it to Romania’s Ana Barbosu. The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee said Sunday it would appeal the reallocation of Chiles’s medal. “We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal,” it said in a statement.

Even the jumps at the Olympic equestrian events were meticulously crafted works of art. France, aiming high for the Paris Olympics — perilously high, many thought — was not about to stick mere poles in the ground and ask horses and their riders to jump those obstacles in the former residence of kings. Uncompromising French ambition has marked the remarkable 16 days of the Olympics, a miracle of detailed planning and execution at a cost of about $4.8 billion. France came into the Games shaken by two rounds of an unexpected legislative election that yielded a political impasse. It will exit with those problems unsolved but with a new self-confidence.

With that run, Wilson became the youngest male U.S. track Olympian, eclipsing middle-distance runner Jim Ryun, who was 17 at the 1964 Olympics. Wilson later became the youngest male Olympic track and field gold medalist ever after the U.S. 4x400-meter relay team — made up of Chris Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, and Rai Benjamin — won gold over Botswana on Saturday. “I was kind of in the moment because I’m watching a 16-year-old running the Olympics — Olympics history,” Norwood said. A Head-Spinning Debut

Breaking is a new sport at this year’s Summer Olympics — at least we’ll call it a sport for the sake of the Games. You probably know it as break dancing, the art form in which performers spin, pose, glide and dance across the floor with incredible athleticism and charisma. The event debuted yesterday in Paris with the women’s, or B-Girls’, competition. Ami Yuasa of Japan, known as B-Girl Ami, bested Lithuania’s Dominika Banevic, or B-Girl Nicka, to win breaking’s first gold medal. The dance spread nationally and globally through movies like “Beat Street” and pioneering crews providing demonstrations in countries like Japan and England.

This interest in the Olympics — and the joy it brings — are felt globally, but especially in the country at the heart of the games, France. Here's why you might feel so happy watching the Olympics and how you can find that joy after the closing ceremony. The number of athlete backstories we learn are multiplied at the Olympics, which makes us that much more invested. That might look like watching the same show or reading a book together, or even more hands-on tasks like gardening, says Lyubomirsky.

Sixty metres into the men’s 100-metre Olympic final in Paris and Noah Lyles is third. The final frontier for him to become Olympic champion was the start… so here’s the story of how a 75-year-old and a stickman helped give Lyles the edge. Team USA's Noah Lyles took the gold in the men’s 100-meter final at the Paris Olympics — by five-thousandths of a second. Lyles, who won Sunday with a time of 9.784 seconds, came out just barely ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson (who ran in 9.789) and the U.S.’ Fred Kerley (whose time was 9.81). It raises the question: Which part of the body must cross the finish line first to earn the win? According to Olympic rules and regulations, the first athlete whose torso reaches the closest edge of the finish line is the winner. That is what earned Lyles the gold and the title of world's fastest man even though some viewers online noted that several other athletes' shoes reached the finish line first.

The participation of Lin and Khelif in Olympic women’s boxing has sparked global outrage in recent days after reports resurfaced that the pair failed to meet gender eligibility tests at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi last year. “As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport,” the IOC said of its eligibility requirements.

This week, the world will tune in to watch what is being billed as the most sustainable Olympic Games in history, a goal the organizers of the Paris Games aim to reach in part by refurbishing buildings instead of constructing new ones. More than 90 percent of the venues that will be used for the Paris Games are temporary or already existed, though many of the buildings are old — including one used in the 1924 Olympics — and needed to be upgraded. For decades, the International Olympic Committee has been stung by images of Olympic venues in disrepair years after the Games end. The soaring cost of putting on the games and the white elephants left in their wake had scared away potential bidders. hopes that its ambitions for more sustainable Olympic facilities will lure other potential bidders.
