PARIS — There are few sights more iconic than the Eiffel Tower and the Olympic rings. The multicolored logo adorned the Eiffel Tower during the Paris 2024 Games, just as they had hung from London’s Tower Bridge in 2012 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2000. However, Hidalgo announced in the French media Aug. 31 that the rings would stay on the Eiffel Tower, until at least 2028 and perhaps beyond. After days of mounting criticism, the Eiffel family weighed in. Nevertheless, the Eiffel family say they won’t climb down without a fight.

Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles, waves the Olympic flag as Thomas Bach, President of International Olympic Committee, applauds during the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Stade de France on August 11, 2024 in Paris, France. After a successful 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, the bar has been set high for the next summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028, something that key stakeholders in that event say the city will be ready for. LA 2028 President Casey Wasserman attended the Paris Games, an event that he told Ross Sorkin "reminded people why they fall in love with the Olympics," and one he said organizers will look to build upon in Los Angeles. Wasserman said Los Angeles got a glimpse of that with the Olympic Torch handover ceremony, when Tom Cruise scaled the Hollywood Sign and the Olympic Rings replaced the "OO"'s in the sign — which Wasserman noted was done with CGI. Actress Jessica Alba, who is on the Los Angeles 2028 board of directors, said the Games will present all different aspects of the city's culture, from Hollywood to fashion to food, as "a global platform to showcase what they got."

Paralympics Will Drop Ban on Olympic Rings Tattoos

For years, Paralympians with tattoos of the Olympic rings were playing a dangerous game: They had to cover the tattoos completely in competition, or face penalties from the International Paralympic Committee, which included disqualification. But ahead of the 2024 Paralympics, which start next week in Paris, the I.P.C. “Athletes with such tattoos do not need to cover them up,” Craig Spence, the chief brand and communications officer for the I.P.C., said in an email on Friday. Mr. Spence declined to offer an explanation for the change in policy. For Paralympians like Rudy Garcia-Tolson, however, the change is a welcome one, regardless of how the I.P.C.

The Social Media Olympics

Just moments after the American wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt won a gold medal at the Paris Games, she let the whole world know what she was thinking:“Oh my gosh I just won the FREAKING OLYMPICS hahahahah DUUUUDE,” she wrote on social media from the event venue. But at the Olympics, it’s part of a new twist — and one of the keys to returning to the sense of a shared national experience that defined the Games of yesteryear. For the last decade or more, it has seemed like the Olympics have struggled to capture relevance the way they did a generation ago. Blame was assigned to a fracturing media landscape and a long string of asterisks (pandemic restrictions in Tokyo, time zone issues in Beijing, a Zika outbreak in Rio de Janeiro, geopolitical tensions in Sochi). But the reason may have been simpler: The Olympics has largely been missing from social media.

The economics of the Olympics

“This will be the first Olympics, since Sydney, where the total costs are coming in under $10 billion,” said Victor Matheson, a College of the Holy Cross professor of economics who has researched the financial costs of the Olympics. Workmen adjust banners on the 3x3 basketball venue located at La Concorde, in Paris, ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Paris Olympic Village will be converted into offices and housing in a historically impoverished neighborhood. Still, economists say, it may take more drastic moves in the future for the Olympics to be truly sustainable and economically sound. “I love the Olympics, and I love sporting events, but I just really do not think that the way the Olympics works now is a viable business model,” Phalin said.

By making history at the Games, Paris medalists will take a bit of France and its history home, too. The iron pieces embedded in the center of the Olympic medals each weigh 18 grams (about two-thirds of an ounce). Japan's northern city of Sapporo last month dropped its bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics and said it would consider hosting the Games in 2034 or in subsequent years. According to studies by the IOC's future host commission for Winter Games, only 10 nations would be able to host the snow sports of the Olympic Winter and Paralympic Games by 2040. Switzerland - which hosted the Winter Olympic Games in St. Moritz in 1928 and 1948 - has struggled in recent years to get its population behind its Olympic bids.
