He deemed them blue zones — a term that first appeared in an academic paper about longevity in Sardinia, Italy published in 2004. I found that the centenarians in the blue zones were missing or dead when the study was conducted. "They were falling in regions that had terrible health, and surprisingly that was the shared characteristic of most blue zones. In the letter they state that Buettner's claims about four of the blue zones, Okinawa, Sardinia, Ikaria and Nicoya, "have been fully validated by strict demographic criteria." Buettner told The New York Times that he frequently visits the blue zones to make sure birth records are accurate.

Many people feel “that they’re not getting enough back, that a college education isn’t worth enough,” said Paul Peterson, a professor of education policy and governance at Harvard University. The data says that college education is worth more than ever.”The dissonance shows how higher education has become another slice of the economy where the vibes are worse than the numbers might suggest — and risks exacerbating Democratic losses with working-class voters. Approximately 1 in 3 U.S. adults ages 18 to 34 live in their parents' home, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. The pandemic caused more young adults to return home or remain living with their parents into their late 20s and 30s, but aside from that spike, the numbers have remained fairly consistent in recent years. The 2008 financial crisis, the Great Recession and the pandemic are all examples of economic shocks. More than half of Gen Z adults say they don't make enough money to live the life they want due to the high cost of living, according to a 2024 survey from Bank of America. Whereas cases of the STI in newborns increased by 30% annually in recent years — greatly alarming public health experts — the upward trend has decelerated. San Francisco’s Public Health Department was the first to recommend doxyPEP for gay and bisexual men and trans women, in October 2022. That helped trigger a long decline in condom use among gay and bisexual men in particular. The protocol, called doxyPrEP, demonstrated generally comparable efficacy at preventing STIs compared with doxyPEP studies among gay men. Public health experts have attributed this century’s surge in STIs, at least in part, to a steady defunding of state and local public-health clinics.

An early portion of the interview focused heavily on transgender people and transition-related medical care, which Vance described as “pharmaceutical conversion therapy” for gay people. “I mean that’s what to me is so crazy about some of the hyper-left-wing reaction,” Vance responded. “Well, I think I’m probably going to pick you, but I don’t know, and I’m not ready to make a decision,” Vance recalled Trump saying. “We’re sitting there watching, like, some stupid show, ‘Emily in Paris’ on Netflix or something,” Vance said, before catching himself.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesLONDON — British businesses are smarting after Finance Minister Rachel Reeves' bumper tax-rising budget, with analysts warning that the measures could slow hiring and push up inflation. Under the new rules, employer NI will rise by 1.2 percentage points to 15% from April 2025, while the level at which employers start paying NI for workers will drop from £9,100 to £5,000. Rain Newton-Smith, chief executive of the Confederation of British Industry, a business interest group, described it as a "tough budget for business." This, despite the fact that younger investors were more optimistic about the economy, their incomes, their living situations, and their investments. Millennial investors have been deeply scarred by two life-changing crises in their young lives. But if you look at hard numbers from the Federal Reserve about what millennial investors actually own, you can see that this stereotype is misguided. When you compare millennials' cash levels with Gen X's cash levels at the same age, though, the risk aversion becomes clear. But when it comes to younger investors, I think the scars run deeper than worries about a coming downturn.

The jobless rate for 16-to-24-year olds in China, excluding students, fell to 17.6% in September from 18.8% a month prior, official data showed on Tuesday, offering officials relief after youth unemployment hit fresh highs for two straight months. Youth unemployment hit a record high of 21.3% in June last year, prompting China to halt publication of the closely watched benchmark until that change was made. But a separate official survey on factory owners' confidence for September showed that firms continued to hold off on hiring last month. The rate last month for 25-to-29-year olds was 6.7%, and also excluded college students, and 3.9% for people between 30 and 59 years of age.
