☆ Companies brace for Tuesday: Mentions of election surge on earnings conference calls

The word "election" came up on 100 earnings calls of S&P 500 -listed firms between Sept. 15 and Oct. 31, according to FactSet. The U.S. presidential election is Tuesday Nov. 5. 'Prudent' clientsMultiple companies cited a feeling of unpredictability tied to the presidential race among consumers and business clients. To be sure, some of the "election" mentions this year were tied to unrelated events like enrollment periods for health care.

Groups in favor of the ballot measure are making a final push as early voting is underway, with hundreds of thousands of ballots already cast. While some states, like California and Vermont, passed abortion rights ballot measures by well over 60%, in other states, such as Michigan and Ohio, they passed by about 56%. Jeanette Nuñez, who opposes the ballot measure, accused the abortion rights ads of being deceptive. And one state agency that regulates health care providers, including abortion clinics, launched a website last month opposing the ballot measure. “But they don’t necessarily connect that there’s a six-week abortion ban.”

☆ Merck says experimental RSV treatment protected infants in trial, paving way for potential approval

Merck plans to discuss the study data with regulators worldwide, with a goal of making the treatment available for infants as early as the 2025 to 2026 RSV season, according to a release. The trial examined the safety and efficacy of a single dose of the treatment, clesrovimab, in healthy preterm and full-term infants entering their first RSV season. Results were consistent through both the five-month and six-month time points in the trial, Merck said. Merck's clesrovimab could potentially compete against a similar treatment from Sanofi and AstraZeneca called Beyfortus, which was in short supply nationwide last RSV season due to unprecedented demand. But Merck's treatment can be administered to infants regardless of their weight, which the company said may offer convenience in terms of dosing.

CNN —The exceptionally warm water of the Gulf of Mexico that supercharged deadly Helene last month was made up to 500 times more likely by human-caused climate change, which also ramped up the hurricane’s wind and rain, according to a new scientific analysis. These ultra-warm ocean temperatures were made between 200 and 500 times more likely by climate change, driven by humans burning fossil fuels, according to the World Weather Attribution, a network of scientists that calculates the role of climate change in extreme weather events using real world data and climate models. Hurricanes as intense as Helene are now about 2.5 times more likely in the region, the study found. Rapid intensification, when a hurricane’s wind speed increases by at least 35 mph within 24 hours, has now become more common due to climate change.

Citigroup on Friday posted a $1.8 billion fourth-quarter loss after booking several large charges tied to overseas risks, last year's regional banking crisis and CEO Jane Fraser's corporate overhaul. All told, the charges — so massive the bank preannounced their effect this week — hit quarterly earnings by $4.66 billion, or $2 per share, Citigroup said. Excluding their effect, earnings would've been 84 cents a share, the bank said. Revenue: $17.44 billion vs. $18.74 billion expected. Fraser called her company's performance "very disappointing" because of the charges but said Citigroup had made "substantial progress" simplifying the bank last year.
