New York CNN —Big oil just got bigger, and shareholders could soon be getting richer. Dollar Tree will reopen these stores with its own products under its brand beginning in the fall, reports my colleague Nathaniel Meyersohn. Dollar Tree, a national company with mostly suburban locations, primarily offers discretionary merchandise like party supplies and home goods. Dollar Tree also owns Family Dollar, based mostly in cities. Family Dollar has underperformed Dollar Tree and other discount chains in recent years, and it’s closing 975 stores.

Occidental Petroleum is in talks to buy CrownRock, one of the last remaining private companies of scale in the Permian basin, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. (AP) — Investor Warren Buffett joined the recent oil-buying spree in the market this week by resuming Berkshire Hathaway's purchases of Occidental Petroleum stock for the first time in four months. Buffett's company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing late Wednesday that it invested more than $246 million to add to its already massive Occidental stake over the first three days of this week. Berkshire bought nearly 4 million more shares of the Houston-based oil producer to give it more than 228 million shares and control of nearly 26% of Occidental. Berkshire's Occidental stake is now worth more than $14.4 billion. In addition to the common Occidental shares Berkshire owns, it also holds 84,897 preferred shares of Occidental that it picked up in 2019 when it helped finance Occidental’s acquisition of Anadarko.

The logo of Amazon is seen at the company logistics center in Lauwin-Planque, northern France, November 15, 2022. Amazon will purchase the credits from the 1PointFive direct air capture (DAC) plant in Texas, which is being developed by oil company Occidental’s Oxy Low Carbon Ventures subsidiary and will use them to help meet its climate target of net zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company did not reveal any financial details of the deal, but developers of DAC technology have said removal credits currently cost in the mid-to-high-triple digits in dollars per metric ton. Microsoft last week signed a multi-year deal for the purchase of 315,000 metric tons with U.S. project developer Heirloom. Jamey Mulligan, head of carbon neutralization science and strategy at Amazon said an “all hands on deck approach” was needed to scale up the technology.
