Major League Baseball permanently banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano on Tuesday for placing hundreds of bets on baseball, including wagers on the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was a member of the team last season. MLB’s Department of Investigations found Marcano placed 387 baseball bets, including 231 MLB-related bets, through a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023, the league said. The Department of Investigations found all four players placed MLB-related bets while in the minors. MLB said a legal sports betting operator informed the league in March that it had “identified past baseball betting activity” from accounts connected to multiple players. He placed 29 baseball bets, including 28 MLB-related bets and one parlay bet on college baseball games in 2021 and 2022, the league said.

The MLB investigation found that 25 of those bets included Pirates games while Marcano was assigned to the Major League club. NEW YORK (AP) — Brad Ausmus was hired by the New York Yankees on Tuesday to replace Carlos Mendoza as bench coach for manager Aaron Boone. Now 54, Ausmus spent 2022 as the Oakland Athletics' bench coach for manager Bob Melvin. Mendoza had been the Yankees' bench coach for four seasons when he left on Nov. 13 to manage the New York Mets. The Yankees said Tuesday that Ausmus will become the third bench coach for Boone, who started with Josh Bard as his bench coach in 2018-19. Ausmus hit .251 with 80 homers and 607 RBIs in 18 seasons for the Padres (1993-96), Detroit (1996, 1999-2000) and Houston (1997-98, 2001-08).

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Oakland Athletics’ move to Las Vegas was unanimously approved Thursday by Major League Baseball team owners, cementing the sport’s first relocation since 2005, according to two people familiar with the vote. Las Vegas will become the fourth city for a franchise that played in Philadelphia from 1901-54, moved to Kansas City for 13 seasons and arrived in Oakland for 1968. The new stadium will be the team’s fifth after Columbia Park (1901-08), Shibe Park (1909-54), Memorial Stadium (1955-67) and the Coliseum. The team announced April 19 it had purchased land in Las Vegas, then a month later replaced that location with a deal with Bally’s and Gaming & Leisure Properties to build a stadium on the Tropicana hotel site along the Las Vegas Strip. While San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose is the 10th-largest television market in the U.S., Las Vegas is the 40th.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manager Bob Melvin's job appears to be safe with the underwhelming San Diego Padres after owner Peter Seidler said in a statement Monday morning that the current leadership team “continues to have my full support.”The announcement came less than 24 hours after the Padres finished the most disappointing season in franchise history at 82-80. There have been numerous reports of a fractured relationship between Melvin, who finished his second season with San Diego and 20th overall as a big league manager, and general manager A.J. “We entered 2023 with expectations that we would build on last year's NLCS appearance and contend for a World Series championship,” Seidler said in the statement. The Padres organization will learn from this season and emerge in 2024 with the pieces in place to compete for San Diego's first World Series title.
