CHICAGO (AP) — As the first blast of wintry weather hit Chicago, dozens of migrant families without a place to live were moved off snowy city streets and into the basement of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in a nearby suburb. The last-minute, temporary solution around 1 a.m. Wednesday, coordinated by volunteers and suburban Oak Park officials, came as Chicago has struggled to house the growing population of asylum-seekers ahead of the deep winter months. City officials have been scouting locations for winterized tents, but City Council members have criticized Johnson's administration for a lack of details. This week, the city publicized its winter efforts, including providing 16 “warming buses” at police stations during overnight hours, and winter coats for new arrivals. Last month, the city touted its partnerships with several outside organizations to provide food, clothing and hygiene items.

Their experience raises broader questions around other high-cost gene therapies coming to market, sometimes after accelerated regulatory approvals, drug pricing experts said. Gene therapies work by replacing genes – the body's blueprint for its development. The gene Zolgensma delivers instructs the body to make a protein vital for muscle control. If gene therapies do fall short, it becomes harder to justify prices that researchers have argued are already poor value. More recently, the first hemophilia gene therapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was priced by CSL Behring at $3.5 million; 26 more gene therapies are in late-stage development, according to IQVIA.

And Mr. Adams, an executive director in cybersecurity for Comcast, was tied down by his job. The pandemic, too, had changed the landscape: Mr Adams was largely working remotely and was free to move. “We thought, are we going to be able to swing it?” Ms. Adams said. “We needed to be near Pepperdine,” Ms. Adams said, adding that other requirements included ample parking (the family has several cars), storage space and a yard. They also wanted at least three bedrooms, two bathrooms and enough space for Mr. Adams to work from home.

CHICAGO—Andre Brown went out earlier this month for opening day at one of the most unusual salmon-fishing spots in the country: a lagoon off Lake Michigan with the Chicago skyline for a backdrop. “This place was jam packed,“ said Mr. Brown, a 51-year-old electrician from nearby Oak Park, Ill. ”I got out of my truck and all I see was water splashing. They were just pulling them out like they were grocery shopping at Jewel,” he added, referring to a local grocery chain.
