Her book “My Black Country: A Journey Through ” Country Music’s Past, Present and Future,” was published this month. I hear Black moonshiners and Black cowboys, Black nature lovers and Black ghosts, Black angels, Black freedom fighters, gunslingers and Black shotgun riders. It could start a groundswell of long overdue recognition of the overlooked Black country legends and hope for the Black country stars of the future. But for Black performers in particular, it offers a seat, at long last, at a gathering of the country music family. As I write in “My Black Country,” “I have imagined Black country and country to be born as an art form, as an aesthetic, in the year 1624 near Jamestown, Virginia.

A Nigerian TV broadcast from 2021 of settlements belonging to the Fulani ethnic group being torn down in Abuja is being falsely shared online as building demolitions ordered by a government minister in 2023. Speaking in August at the site of a deadly building collapse in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory minister Nyesom Wike said all structures in his constituency without adequate building approvals would be demolished (here). Some social media users then shared a broadcast report about Fulani settlements being torn down, suggesting it showed Wike’s order being carried out. “FCT Minister Nyesom Wike at work ooo, starting from Fulani settlement and some areas along Airport,Abuja, FCT, Nigeria,” said Facebook posts sharing the video (here), (here). Some 66% of U.S. workers say companies should adopt extended vacation policies, like a month off in August, in their workplaces, according to a Morning Consult survey of 1,047 U.S. adults. Several countries offer even more by law before paid public holidays come into play, which can add up to more than a month of business days in vacation time per year. But not all U.S. workers say they'd welcome longer vacation policies: 21% of Americans say companies should not adopt extended PTO policies in their workplace, while the remaining respondents say they don't know or don't have an opinion. The survey didn't specifically address the concerns of those against extended time off work, says Ellyn Briggs, brands analyst at Morning Consult. The 25-year-old works in social media in London, where UK workers are entitled to 28 paid vacation days each year. That's roughly two months of business days in vacation time per year. In March, lessor Airborne confiscated four of Flair Airlines' planes because of late payments. A low-cost Canadian upstart airline had four of its planes repossessed by New York-based aircraft lessor Airborne Capital on March 11, forcing the carrier to cancel multiple flights and leaving a trail of disgruntled passengers behind. Flair Airlines CEO Stephen Jones blamed "behind the scenes" scheming between the airline's competitors and Airborne Capital for the repossession of four of Flair's Boeing 737 planes. It's not the first time Flair has clashed with other Canadian airlines. US investment firm 777 Partners owns a 25% stake in Flair Airlines, which was cause for concern for the CTA.

Should you check email on vacation or face a tsunami of messages once you're back at the office? An 'email intervention'Robinson launched an "Email Intervention Campaign" earlier this month to deal with issues like "vacation email panic," he told CNBC Travel. "I encounter tons of people who are burned out from email," said work-life speaker and consultant Joe Robinson. Robinson advises companies to create defined email policies, ideally ones which give workers permission not to check email on vacation. Don't respond (if you don't have to) Emails proliferate like rabbits, said Joe Robinson.
Do your co-workers email you with timely requests even when you're on vacation? If so, you might be writing your out-of-office email wrong, says Brandon Smith, a therapist and career coach known as The Workplace Therapist. Generic messages like, "I'll be OOO until [insert date] with limited access to email" can be easy to shrug off. "When I see that, I assume they are at home and took a day to clean their apartment," Smith says. This can set a stronger boundary and help you elicit more guilt from whoever dares cross it.
