ProPublica reported last week that two Texas women died after they faced delays in getting miscarriage care because of the state’s abortion ban. In “The Menendez Brothers,” a new documentary, the two men speak in extended interviews about what happened in the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, inside the family’s Beverly Hills mansion. According to Lyle Menendez, it “was tremendously painful” when that didn’t happen. Three EPA whistleblowers told ProPublica on Thursday that their complaints were the subject of the reports (which redact employee names). I knew viewers were seeing these stories because Norah was the driving force behind telling them. Like so many watching, I marveled at the incredible athleticism of these young women, as well as at their diversity. Equally exciting was the fact that this was the first Olympics in history where there were as many women as men competing. We’re also in the midst of a campaign that could result in the election of the first woman president, and first woman of color as president.

“CBS Evening News,” one of America’s longest-running newscasts, is getting a significant overhaul, one that will put the role of a singular and towering Walter Cronkite-like evening news anchor in the rearview mirror. Just two days after Norah O’Donnell announced that she would depart the show’s anchor chair this fall, CBS News executives said she would be replaced by John Dickerson, the network’s lead political analyst and the host of an evening CBS News streaming show, and Maurice DuBois, a longtime anchor for the CBS affiliate in New York. Additionally, the network named Lonnie Quinn, a local weatherman and Mr. DuBois’s colleague at WCBS-TV, the first-ever chief weathercaster for “Evening News.” Other veteran CBS journalists, like Jim Axelrod, Steve Hartman and Margaret Brennan, are expected to be regular presences on the show, as will other correspondents. Mr. DuBois and Mr. Quinn will continue in their local roles as well, the network said. New York CNN —Norah O’Donnell will step down as anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News following the November election, the veteran journalist told colleagues Tuesday in a memo. O’Donnell, who has helmed the venerable evening news program for nearly five years, will transition to a new role as senior correspondent after the election, contributing stories and “big interviews” across CBS’ platforms and shows. CNN —Billie Eilish’s new song, “Lunch” is the definitive queer anthem of 2024. Eilish’s “Lunch” symbolizes the seismic evolution in queer women expression in music. Eilish’s “Lunch” is a brilliant reinvention of our freedom of queer expression, and it comes at a most desperate time. If only we tune into Eilish’s song and to its inherent humanity — carnal, raw, authentic — and recognize in it our own hidden desires that we should face with the same openness she does. What Eilish has achieved, though, with her latest album and particularly with the song, “Lunch,” is to raise the bar on the unabashed expression of queer and women’s sexual desire.
