CNN —A tropical depression making its way towards the Florida coast is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Debby Saturday before delivering heavy, flooding rainfall and dangerous storm surge to the state starting this weekend. The storm is expected to enter the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and become Tropical Storm Debby, according to the hurricane center. Tropical storm conditions could begin Saturday night in parts of southwest Florida. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Dry Tortugas and the west coast of the Florida peninsula from East Cape Sable to Boca Grande. Parts of the Florida Keys and parts of the Central Florida coast are also under a tropical storm watch, with officials urging residents there to prepare for tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours.

CNN —The man accused of stabbing author Salman Rushdie was charged with three federal terrorism-related counts, according to a grand jury indictment unsealed Wednesday. Hadi Matar is charged with committing an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and providing material support to terrorists. Matar has already pleaded not guilty to state charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault in connection with the stabbing. Matar recently rejected a state plea deal that would have tied in a federal terrorism-related charge and reduced his state prison sentence. Matar will appear in federal court at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Buffalo, New York, according to court records.

In its normal state it rotates very fast, keeping blisteringly cold air locked in the Arctic region. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued “public safety concern” bulletins Saturday to state and local law enforcement and said they are monitoring for any impact on the US domestic threat environment, a law enforcement official said. Israel then launched airstrikes on Gaza while its forces clashed on the ground with Hamas fighters. In Israel, at least 300 people have died and thousands of others are wounded, officials said. In Gaza, at least 232 Palestinians have died and more than 1,600 are wounded, the Palestinian health ministry said.
