Macron was joined by his wife, Brigitte, and Laurent Ulrich, the archbishop of Paris, as he made his way around the restored building. Bright winter sunshine lit up the stained-glass windows and creamy stonework gleaming in place of huge charred holes. In the square outside, Macron was surrounded by crowds of cheering artisans, architects, business leaders and donors. The charred oak ceiling that was punctured by the spire that crashed into it has been replaced with new wood. “It was a challenge many deemed impossible, yet one we will have met on,” Macron said.

The resurrection of Notre Dame – the treasured Gothic gem in the heart of Paris struck by a devastating fire in 2019 – has been a closely guarded secret. Few had seen the meticulous work of architects, artisans and master craftspeople who have carefully brought the cathedral back to life. Many will remember watching in horror five years ago as bright orange flames engulfed the 860-year-old Gothic cathedral, its famed spire toppling from the Paris skyline. At the time, Macron vowed the beloved building would be restored and set an ambitious deadline of five years. Fast forward 2,055 days, the seemingly impossible has been achieved and the €700 million ($737 million) restoration is complete.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — After spending the last eight seasons as Craig Counsell’s bench coach, Pat Murphy is taking over for his former boss as the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager. Counsell took over as the Brewers’ manager when Ron Roenicke was fired in 2015. He hired Murphy as his bench coach following that 2015 season. When the Padres hired Andy Green as their full-time manager after the 2015 season, Murphy joined Counsell’s staff in Milwaukee.
