A popular influencer apologized this week for her past racist posts on social media, prompting outrage from some Black creators who say they are tired of white creators constantly having their previous racist behavior unearthed without significant repercussions. Who is changing if this same thing happens like clockwork?” said creator Cameron Kira in a TikTok video, which stitched footage from her own 2023 video in which she addressed a different creator’s racist tweets. Some Black creators also said that they feel white creators who previously posted racist remarks emphasize that they have changed with little evidence to suggest they have. She said it wasn’t until after college that she began to “shift her way of thinking.”In a follow-up video, Schofield said she “missed the mark” in her first attempt and directed her second apology to Black viewers. We get treated like adults.”People online have become desensitized to racism from white creators, according to Barry.

Let the Pros Play With the ‘Trump (or Harris) Trade’

“Sell in May and go away,” is an old Wall Street adage. I first heard about it from my father, a New York businessman, on a hot afternoon back in the last century. “The Trump trade” is what financial strategies associated with the shifting fortunes of the former president are being called. Such market bets have been connected by Wall Street analysts to movements in the prices of gun, prison and fossil-fuel energy stocks. And the Trump trade has also been attributed to small moves in bond yields and in expectations of changes in transactions, from mergers and acquisitions to the exchange rate of the dollar.

London CNN —Thousands of Taylor Swift’s UK fans have been duped into buying fake tickets for her upcoming Eras Tour concerts, according to a major British bank. With all UK dates now sold out, desperate fans are more likely to turn to resale sites and social media for tickets. Lloyds said it expects to see “many more fans fall victim to ticket scams in the coming weeks and months,” leading up to the first concert in Edinburgh, Scotland. According to UK Finance, a financial services industry association, Brits lost more than £40 million ($50 million) to “purchase scams,” including sales of fraudulent tickets, in the first half of last year. In November, the bank warned customers over ticket scams relating to Glastonbury, the popular outdoor music festival held annually in England in the summer.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago won't renew its ShotSpotter contract and plans to stop using the controversial gunshot detection system later this year, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office announced Tuesday. The system, which relies on an artificial intelligence algorithm and network of microphones to identify gunshots, has been criticized for inaccuracy, racial bias and law enforcement misuse. Chicago's $49 million contract with SoundThinking, a public safety technology company, expires Friday. The city plans to wind down use of ShotSpotter technology by late September, according to city officials. The Stop ShotSpotter Coalition praised the announcement but said Chicago should end the use of the technology sooner.

Five Black candidates are running for statewide office, from agriculture commissioner to secretary of state. A common complaint is about a purging of voter rolls that has caused problems for Black voters as recently as this year’s August primary. Many other states in recent years have taken steps to reinstate voting rights for former felons. Critics also said it was another way to make it harder for Black voters to elect candidates of their choice. That sentiment is especially strong on college campuses, a focal point of several of the Black candidates running for statewide office.

CNN —Federal agencies are making final preparations with the government on the brink of a shutdown and congressional lawmakers racing against Saturday’s critical midnight deadline. “After meeting with House Republicans this evening, it’s clear the misguided Senate bill has no path forward and is dead on arrival,” McCarthy wrote on X. But there is still no consensus on what - if anything - they will put on the House floor Saturday to avoid a government shutdown. McCarthy argued on Friday that aid to Ukraine should be dropped from the Senate bill. Border security has also become a complicating factor for the Senate bill as many Republicans now want to see the bill amended to address the issue.

CNN —Speaker Kevin McCarthy deflected questions about the additional charges filed Thursday against former President Donald Trump in the case alleging mishandling of classified documents during his time in the White House, instead pointing to President Joe Biden. In his latest defense of Trump, McCarthy questioned why Biden had classified documents from his time as a senator and why the president hasn’t been indicted, but would not engage on the new charges that Trump is facing. “What concerns me is you have a sitting president that has a situation like this, but even worse, that had documents, but nothing’s happened,” McCarthy told CNN’s Manu Raju. Trump, who already faced 37 criminal charges in the case, was charged with an additional count of willful retention of national defense information and two additional obstruction counts. In one recent example, CNN reported earlier this month that McCarthy told Trump in a private phone call that he personally backed the idea of expunging Trump’s two impeachments and would bring it up to the conference to gauge support, a source said.

London CNN —A rising number of British stores are using a facial recognition system powered by artificial intelligence to identify repeat shoplifters in what one human rights group has called the spread of “airport-style security” on the high street. Human rights groups say this type of technology flouts people’s right to privacy and often makes mistakes. Facewatch also retains shoppers’ data for only two weeks — half the amount of time a regular “CCTV” security camera in the UK typically stores footage. But Gordon is confident Facewatch’s system doesn’t have any bias and stresses that it is supported by human staff who’ve been trained in facial recognition. Last month, the European Parliament agreed to ban the use of real-time, AI-powered facial recognition technology in public spaces.

The International Tchaikovsky Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious music contests, is typically a bustling, Olympics-style gathering that every four years brings talented young pianists, violinists, cellists, singers and others from around the globe to Russia. But as the storied competition unfolds this month for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine and became a pariah in the West, it is struggling to live up to its reputation. The contest, which is organized and financed by the Russian government, was expelled from the international federation of music competitions because of the war. And, amid a crackdown on free speech, the foreign press corps representation is less robust, save for journalists from nations friendly to Russia, including China. “It’s genuinely sad because it was very prestigious.”

“It’s kind of like the old saying, when everything’s a priority, nothing’s a priority,” said Jason Johnson, who was a deputy police chief in Baltimore overseeing compliance with the city’s consent decree. Even so, believers point out that consent decrees may be far cheaper than unconstitutional policing. “What we’re talking about is broad institutional reform,” said David Douglass, the deputy monitor of the New Orleans consent decree and founder of a nonprofit group called Effective Law Enforcement for All, which helps communities develop voluntary reforms. In Baltimore, Michael Harrison, who was brought in as commissioner because of his success in implementing New Orleans’s police overhaul, just resigned, but the consent decree remains. Experience running a department with a consent decree has become a plum line on a chief’s résumé.

Egg prices are crashing. Here’s why
  + stars: | 2023-05-15 | by ( Danielle Wiener-Bronner | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
One reason: Shoppers responded to high egg prices by buying less. When prices were shooting up, “everybody and their brother had a story about what egg prices were doing,” said Amy Smith, vice president at Advanced Economic Solutions, a consulting firm. Retail egg prices have been declining at a more moderate clip. (On an annual basis, prices are still high: In the year through April, egg prices were 21.4% higher.) That’s because supermarkets and grocery stores set retail egg prices, and they don’t want customers to be scared away by wild swings.

Comedy contusions aside, “Clock” is a movie that finds horror in biology, as well as in peer pressure and the impulse to conform. Upon being asked, she immediately drifts into a reverie about her daily regimen—swimming, sex, cooking, work, volunteering, massages. “All women have a biological clock,” says her gynecologist ( Nikita Patel ). “Maybe yours is just broken.” An appalling thing for a doctor to say, perhaps, but Ella has been wondering the same thing.
Washington CNN —Detained American Paul Whelan expressed his frustration that more has not been done to secure his release in an exclusive CNN interview hours after another detained American, Brittney Griner, was freed. It was a choice between bringing home one particular American – Brittney Griner – or bringing home none,” a US senior administration official said Thursday morning. Elizabeth Whelan said she believes the Russians wanted to deny Biden a win by releasing both of the American wrongful detainees. Elizabeth Whelan also told CNN that she does not believe her brother knows the extent of the efforts to free him, noting the family has to be careful what they tell him because they assume the Russian authorities are listening. Asked if he thought he would face repercussions for speaking to CNN, Whelan said he didn’t think so.
I Hated Fishing. Then Fishing Changed My Life.

We have caught big ones and small ones, and we have lost big and small ones too. Most important, we are now able to bore anyone on earth with a 20-minute story about fishing, which is a true sign we’ve arrived as fishermen. I know it sounds a little silly when you hear fishermen talk about how fishing changed their lives, because they always talk about how fishing changed their lives, but it changed our lives too. We are out there all the time, fishing, trying to add another fish to the list. Jesse, who is 9, likes to say we are addicted, and that’s probably true.
CNN —Amazon workers in upstate New York have voted against forming a union, dealing another blow to a grassroots labor group attempting to organize several of the tech giant’s US warehouses. Workers at the facility, called ALB1, were seeking to organize with the Amazon Labor Union, the same grassroots worker group that successfully formed the first-ever union at a US Amazon facility in Staten Island, New York, earlier this year. The Albany vote was the ALU’s third attempt to unionize an Amazon warehouse, after it fell short of securing a union win at a smaller Amazon facility also located in Staten Island. It also comes as Amazon has still not formally recognized the union in Staten Island or come to the bargaining table. But ahead of the Albany vote last week, Smalls appeared to play down the ramifications of the outcome, suggesting the organizing activity itself is a victory.
The next month, that same group, the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), fell short at a smaller facility across the street. On Wednesday, workers at an Amazon facility near Albany, New York, will begin voting on whether to join the ALU and become the second unionized Amazon warehouse in the United States. It also comes as Amazon has still not formally recognized the union in Staten Island or come to the bargaining table. Chris Smalls, a leader of the Amazon Labor Union, leads a march of Starbucks and Amazon workers and their allies to the homes of their CEOs to protest union busting on Labor Day, September 5, 2022, in New York City, New York. “I think they have an uphill battle ahead,” Kochan said of the union vote at the ALB1 facility.
