The owner of a Boston area pizza chain who forced undocumented victims to work for him in grueling conditions, and under violent physical abuse and threats of deportation, has been sentenced to over eight years in prison. He was convicted in a jury trial on three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor in June. The sentencing of Papantoniadis marks just the latest in a string of complaints over labor practices at his businesses. In 2019, the business owners were ordered to pay more than $300,000 in back wages, according to NBC Boston. The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office said it received three complaints since 2019 against Stash’s Pizza, similarly over wage and hour violations.

CNN —The owner of two Boston-area pizza shops has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for subjecting employees to years of violence and intimidation, according to prosecutors. In June, he was convicted on three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor. Authorities discovered that Papantoniadis operated his pizza shops with a skeletal staff, forced workers to perform grueling shifts of 14 hours or more, often seven days a week. Papantoniadis violently choked a worker who expressed his intention to quit, causing the victim to flee in fear, investigators found. “Today’s significant sentence sends a message to employers — employees deserve to work in safety, free from harassment and abuse.”

Music fans both here in Philadelphia and around the world have reason to mourn on Wednesday as legendary R&B artist, songwriter and producer Frankie Beverly has died. On Wednesday morning, Beverly’s family announced the founder of the funk and soul band Maze -- who was born Howard Stanley Beverly -- passed away the day before. He lived for his music, family and friends. “After catching the attention of legendary songwriter and producer Kenny Gamble, the group had several releases under Philly-based record label Cameo Parkway,” wrote Tribune correspondent O.J. The last two races of the Paris Games were a gold rush for the U.S., with both the women and men dominating the 4x400-meter relays Saturday. A three-time gold medalist after wins in the 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay, Thomas helped widen the gap in the third lap that McLaughlin-Levrone created in the second. In the last lap, it came down to a race between two gold medalists: Benjamin and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo. With the victory, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson — who ran earlier in the week for the U.S. but not in the final — is now the youngest Olympic track-and-field gold medalist ever. He is also the youngest male U.S. Olympic gold medalist in any sport since 1952.

With that run, Wilson became the youngest male U.S. track Olympian, eclipsing middle-distance runner Jim Ryun, who was 17 at the 1964 Olympics. Wilson later became the youngest male Olympic track and field gold medalist ever after the U.S. 4x400-meter relay team — made up of Chris Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, and Rai Benjamin — won gold over Botswana on Saturday. “I was kind of in the moment because I’m watching a 16-year-old running the Olympics — Olympics history,” Norwood said. Quincy Wilson competes in the men's 400-meter final at the U.S. Track and Field Trials on June 24. The showing led USA Track & Field to include him in the pool of runners eligible to run on a U.S. relay in Paris.

CNN —The most diverse US women’s gymnastics team in history will begin competing this weekend at the Olympic Games, inspiring younger gymnasts in the process. But far from Paris, at James Jones Gymnastics Academy (JJGA) in Jonesboro, Georgia, everyone — from the eponymous Jones himself to his gymnasts – are Black. The gym owner and coach said seeing this year’s diverse Olympic team competing at the highest level in a sport where their race has been underrepresented is inspiring. “It makes me feel wonderful,” Jones told CNN. Wilson ran a 44.20 to reset the U18 men’s 400m world record and broke his own U.S. high school record en route to winning the race at the American Track League event in Gainesville, Fla. He’ll head to Paris as one of six runners in the pool for America’s 4×400 relay team. The relay pool is designed to spread out the load over two rounds. The relay team will be officially announced later this month, and Wilson is firmly in the mix. Virginia Norwood, an aerospace pioneer who invented the scanner that has been used to map and study the earth from space for more than 50 years, has died at her home in Topanga, Calif. She was 96. Her death was announced by the United States Geological Survey, whose Landsat satellite program relies on her invention. Her daughter, Naomi Norwood, said that her mother was found dead in her bed on the morning of March 27. Ms. Norwood, a physicist, was the person primarily responsible for designing and championing the scanner that made the program possible. NASA has called her “the mother of Landsat.”
Nearly four years after a Bronx building collapse killed an Ecuadorean construction worker crushed under 1000 pounds of debris, three contractors have been charged in his death, one of a series of worksite fatalities that have raised alarms about a perilous industry. The contractors, Augustine Adesanmi, 67, Akhlak Choudhary, 54, and Abazi Okoro, 66, were all accused of criminally negligent homicide, among other charges, in the death of Segundo Huerta, a laborer at the building site on East 208th Street in Norwood, the Bronx district attorney said on Wednesday. “The horrendous death of Segundo Manuel Huerta Mayancela, who was buried under cinder blocks and metal sheets, was entirely preventable,” Darcel D. Clark, the district attorney, told reporters after the arraignments on Wednesday. “The construction site at 94 E. 208th St. was a death trap waiting to happen,” she added. Two of the contractors were arraigned on Tuesday in the Bronx Supreme Court; both were put on supervised release.
Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas are facing off in the Chicago mayoral runoff election. The winning candidate will succeed Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who was the third-place finisher in the initial Feb. 28 mayoral election behind Vallas and Johnson, respectively, missing her chance to compete in the runoff.
