Rival United Airlines — second to Delta in net profit margins — is circling. Delta plans to open Delta One lounges in Boston and Los Angeles later this year, and is studying airports where it could open others. Like other airlines, Delta accepted billions in federal aid to weather the pandemic. Luxury air travel and the United States didn't go together for many years — and might not still, if you ask well-heeled globetrotters. And at Delta and other airlines, many of the perks for luxury flyers come through lounges.

In 1958, when Mary Pat Laffey Inman became a stewardess — as they were then called — for Northwest Airlines, she was 20 years old and the clock was already ticking. That is, if she didn’t marry, get pregnant or even gain too much weight before that: All were grounds for termination. Six years later, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, and female flight attendants began to join forces against sexism. It also set the precedent for nondiscriminatory hiring of flight attendants across the industry. But even then, not everything changed: Flight attendants on some airlines were still subjected to “weigh-ins” into the 1990s.

A few years back, she began thinking about AI after working on a fashion game tied to a line she designed for Walmart. The tagged imagery is fed into the AI model to train it. “It took us about a month to get it to the right point,” said Cyril Foiret, founder and creative director of Maison Meta. Foiret said they essentially had to develop a mini AI model just for that. Last year, she contacted Maison Meta, which was creating a name for itself through projects like organizing the first AI Fashion Week with Revolve.

☆ American Airlines’ flight attendants want to strike. But it won’t disrupt your holiday travels

New York CNN —American Airlines’ flight attendants’ union wants permission from the government to go on strike in 30 days. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents more than 23,000 members at American has not overcome any of the many legal hurdles it needs to conquer before the union could strike. But even if the flight attendants win their request to have the clock start ticking towards a strike 30 days from now, a strike then is not likely. But it’s possible, and in the case of American Airlines, likely, that Congress would act to block a strike. Last month, flight attendants at Southwest Airlines won an immediate 20% raise, with retroactive pay.

New York CNN —American Airlines pilots voted to go on strike Monday. Southwest pilots are holding a strike vote as well. Many unions have had members participate in informational pickets at major airports, at American pilots did Monday. The last time a major airline was grounded by a strike was 25 years ago when Northwest Airlines pilots went on strike for two weeks. But most negotiations are settled, even after a strike vote, without a work stoppage.
