A collection of stocks on Wall Street may have recently gotten ahead of themselves. Shares of aerospace and defense contractor Northrop Grumman have advanced roughly 9% in 2024 and 5% in August alone. The company's second-quarter results in July surpassed Wall Street estimates on the top and bottom lines, while Northrop's full-year revenue outlook also beat analysts' expectations. UBS analyst Gavin Parsons recently highlighted Northrop as the bank's top pick among aerospace and defense stocks, citing awards of two of the Pentagon's top three "priority programs" as well as higher defense spending. The deal, at a planned $83.50 per share, is the largest acquisition on Wall Street in 2024 so far.

We're approaching a new era of defense, one that will use AI-enabled military drones that can run without a human operator. According to BTIG, the DoD requested $5.3 billion in fiscal year 2025 for unmanned systems, most of which is directed at procurement programs. The firm forecasts the DoD's entire unmanned funding requests to grow at a 9.5% compound annual growth rate through fiscal year 2029. General Dynamics is another of Madrid's buy-rated stock in the unmanned systems arena. Strong demand of its defense products, including ammo and ground vehicles, also indicate earnings growth potential, the analyst added.

The Pentagon's Space Development Agency on Monday announced about $1.3 billion in contracts to York Space and Northrop Grumman to build communications satellites. Under the T2TL-Alpha awards, Northrop will build 38 "data transport" satellites for $732 million, while York will build 62 satellites for $617 million. Northrop's award to build Alpha variant satellites for T2TL comes months after the defense giant won an SDA order for Beta variants. In August, Northrop won a $733 million award to build 36 satellites for the T2TL-Beta segment of PWSA, alongside Lockheed Martin . The SDA has previously awarded contracts to build and operate satellites in its fleet to SpaceX and L3Harris, in addition to Northrop, York and Lockheed.

The Pentagon's Space Development Agency on Monday awarded $1.5 billion in contracts to Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman for prototype communications satellites. Lockheed and Northrop will each build 36 of the prototype satellites, scheduled to begin launching by September 2026. Those "Tranche 0" satellites were the first effort to demonstrate the feasibility of SDA's network. In addition to communications, the SDA network aims to provide the U.S. military with features such as missile warning and tracking capabilities. SDA has previously awarded contracts to build and operate satellites in its fleet to York Space, SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and L3Harris .

In an interview, O'Leary said this would not deter JetZero and its radical design. The Air Force said materials and manufacturing advances have made production more attainable. Whereas Boeing aimed to commission new engines for its abandoned project, JetZero says aerodynamic savings allow it to exploit existing models. Capital Alpha Partners analyst Byron Callan said the decision to back JetZero suggested Air Force "frustration" with traditional aerospace companies' use of cash to favor shareholders rather than bigger developmental risks. "One way to potentially change behaviors is to award contracts to smaller firms like JetZero," he wrote.
