HANOI, Vietnam — A flash flood swept away an entire hamlet in northern Vietnam, killing 22 people and leaving dozens missing as deaths from a typhoon and its aftermath climbed to 141 on Wednesday. Vietnamese state broadcaster VTV said the torrent of water gushing down from a mountain in Lao Cai province Tuesday buried Lang Nu hamlet with 35 families in mud and debris. Floods and landslides have caused most of the deaths, many of which have come in the northwestern province of Lao Cai, bordering China, where Lang Nu is located. Lao Cai province is also home to the popular trekking destination of Sapa. Many roads in the province were blocked by landslides and unrelenting rainfall, said Sapa tour guide Van A Po.

Hong Kong CNN —Fifty years after Henry Kissinger drove American foreign policy in Southeast Asia, the region continues to live with the fallout from the bombing and military campaigns backed by the former secretary of state, who died last week. That’s more than the Allies dropped during World War II, according to an account by Yale University historian Ben Kiernan. Experts say the devastation – which is especially acute for people in rural areas – will go on for years to come. That’s Kissinger’s legacy,” said Bill Morse, president of the nonprofit Landmine Relief Fund, which supports organizations including Cambodia Self-Help Demining. Vietnam has already rail connections to China, but the system is old with limited capacity on the Vietnam side. The upgraded railway would pass through the region where Vietnam has its largest deposits of rare earths, of which China is by far the world's biggest refiner. Chinese and Vietnamese rare earths industry experts discussed last week stronger cooperation on processing the minerals, according to Vietnamese state media. It is unclear how much China would contribute to the upgraded railway track in Vietnam and whether Hanoi would accept sizeable financing from Beijing on this. A strengthened railway link could also boost Vietnam's export to China, mostly of agriculture products, boost Chinese tourism to northern Vietnam and further integrate the two countries' manufacturing industries, which experts already consider as symbiotic, with factories in Vietnam largely assembling components produced in China.

HANOI, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Apple (AAPL.O) supplier Luxshare Precision Industry Co (002475.SZ) has been awarded a license to invest an additional $330 million in its plant in Vietnam's northern province of Bac Giang, raising the total investment to $504 million, provincial authorities said. The facility is expected to be completed in 12 to 24 months, it added. China-based Luxshare, one of Apple's main AirPods makers, started investing in Vietnam since 2019. Its additional investment in the country comes as other manufacturers seek to further diversify production away from China. Earlier this year, another Apple supplier, Foxconn, set up a new factory in central Vietnam and raised its investment in the country by $250 million to make electric vehicles and telecom parts.

REUTERS/Francesco Guarascio/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsHANOI, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Police in Vietnam have arrested six people accused of violating mining regulations, including the chairman of a company at the heart of efforts to develop Vietnam's rare earth industry, seizing 13,715 tons of rare earths ores. VTRE has partnered with Australian mining companies Australian Strategic Materials (ASM) (ASM.AX) and Blackstone Minerals LTD (BSX.AX), which were not involved in the investigation. ASM signed a binding agreement in April with VTRE for the purchase of 100 tons of processed rare earths this year, and committed to negotiating a longer-term supply deal. Vietnam is planning to organise auctions for concessions at its largely unexploited rare earths mines, which are considered to contain the world's second biggest deposits of the critical minerals used in electric cars and wind turbines.

A VinFast VF8 electric SUV is displayed during CES 2022 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. January 5, 2022. If fulfilled, Europe would become VinFast's biggest overseas market this year. The company had shipped about 2,100 EVs earlier this year to the United States. Should the EU probe conclude that punitive duties on China-made EVs are warranted, VinFast could find its cars are more competitively priced. VinFast, which is part of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup (VIC.HM), was formed in 2017 and began making EVs in 2021 after dropping its manufacturing of cars with internal combustion engines.

Of that, up to $200 million would be for its Indonesian plant, targeting production in 2026 with an output of 30,000 to 50,000 units each year. Since its establishment in 2017, VinFast has announced numerous ambitious EV growth plans overseas. VinFast aims to establish its own distributors and may open show rooms in those locations, it said. VinFast is entering the American market at a time when EV pricing is under pressure, led by market leader Tesla and a range of Chinese companies. Shares of Vietnam's largest conglomerate and VinFast parent Vingroup (VIC.HM) were down 0.33% as of 0635 GMT.

China is dominant in magnets and the rare earth metals they are made from. Magnet makers are also drawn to Vietnam by low labour costs and market access afforded by multiple free-trade deals. It said it sources most of its rare earths from China but is seeking alternative sources in Vietnam and Australia and plans to develop a processing facility in Vietnam. A similar request from clients prompted another Chinese magnet maker, Magsound, to decide to open a factory in Vietnam in the first half of next year, the two people said. In April, Australia's Strategic Materials (ASM.AX) signed a deal with a Vietnamese refiner that committed to supplying rare earths for export to South Korea.

Chinese automaker BYD to make EVs in Vietnam
  + stars: | 2023-05-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
HANOI, May 8 (Reuters) - Chinese automaker BYD Co. (002594.SZ) plans to expand into electric vehicles manufacturing and assembly in Vietnam, according to a Vietnamese government statement citing the company's chair. Reuters in January exclusively reported that the Xian-based EV maker had plans to open a plant in Vietnam to produce car parts, with the aim to export components to an assembly plant planned in neighbouring Thailand. The statement did not mention how much new investment BYD would top up for the expansion. The presence of BYD would pose a direct challenge to VinFast, a Vietnamese EV maker that began selling cars in 2019 and plans to expand in the United States and Europe. Last September, BYD, backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, announced that it would build an EV assembly plant in Thailand with annual capacity of 150,000 cars from 2024.

HANOI, April 22 (Reuters) - Apple supplier Quanta Computer (2382.TW) plans to set up a factory in northern Vietnam, the Vietnamese government said. The company, a MacBook contract manufacturer, on Friday signed an agreement with the authorities of Nam Dinh province, 90 km (56 miles) south of Hanoi, to construct the facility at an industrial park there, the government said in a statement late on Friday. The facility, which would be Quanta's 9th factory globally, would initially cover an area of 22.5 hectares, the statement said, without giving its capacity nor a time frame for the construction. Local media said on Saturday Quanta would invest $120 million in the factory. Reporting by Khanh Vu; Editing by Kim CoghillOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Adding impetus to the move is the increasing cost of labour in China, expanding U.S. restrictions on high-tech-related trade with China, and tit-for-tat tariffs from a Sino-U.S. trade war that triggered a past wave of Chinese investment in Vietnam. "Enquiries from Chinese firms about manufacturing investment in Vietnam grew exponentially in the last quarter of last year," said Michael Chan, senior director of leasing at industrial real estate specialist BW Industrial Development. "Chinese investment has also increased remarkably," he said. Chinese firms also experience longer times to obtain staff visas and work permits, said Filippo Bortoletti, who heads the Vietnamese unit of investment consultancy Dezan Shira. "Chinese companies move here mostly to serve their clients who moved earlier," said BW Industrial Development's Chan.

The company announced in September it would build an EV assembly plant in Thailand with annual capacity of 150,000 cars from 2024. Talks are underway to select a site for the Vietnam plant, said the sources, who declined to be named because the discussions are confidential. The Vietnam plant will export components to the assembly plant to be built in Thailand, one source said. That would pose a direct challenge to VinFast, a Vietnamese EV maker that began selling cars in 2019 and plans to expand in the United States and Europe.
HANOI, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Chinese display maker BOE Technology Group Co Ltd (000725.SZ), a supplier of both Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS), plans to invest a substantial sum to build two factories in Vietnam, two people familiar with the matter said. BOE plans to make the more sophisticated organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) screens at the site rather than liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), the person said. Apple, which included BOE in its 2021 list of manufacturing partners, uses OLED screens for its latest iPhone smartphones. The U.S. tech giant, however, plans to start making mobile screens in-house by next year, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. BOE's Vietnam plan is not specifically aimed at supplying Apple, the person said.
Making silk is a tedious process that includes raising hungry worms and hand-pulling silk from cocoons. In Vietnam, traditional craft villages have struggled as cheaper, fake silk floods the market. But families in Nam Cao village saved their silk business by banding together and forming a cooperative. They make silk by hand in a tedious, 30-step process. We head to northern Vietnam to learn how Nam Cao village saved its big business of silk.
My first bites of bánh cuốn were hardly intentional — they came from a banh mi shop tucked in Houston’s Third Ward. I’d been working at a day care, and also a stadium’s parking company, and most of what I ate came from this tiny Vietnamese spot. Several weeks after that he just handed me a bag of boxed bánh cuốn, with separate tins for fish sauce and bean sprouts, alongside an edict: enough. Eating streetside bánh cuốn in the morning, in the hubbub of other diners, over a stool and folding table, is basically a miracle. The thickness of your bánh cuốn might vary from restaurant to restaurant, and also your fillings, but you’ll still find yourself won over from iteration to iteration.
