AdvertisementNew York City is on the verge of legalizing accessory dwelling units in much of the city. The effort is part of the mayor's "City of Yes" housing plan, designed to boost the supply of homes. More than a dozen states across the country have legalized ADUs in recent years, and New York State greenlit the secondary units in 2022, although New York City has restricted them. Last year, New York City rolled out a pilot program that awarded 15 homeowners with up to nearly $400,000 in funding per household to build an extra dwelling in their backyard, basement, or attic. Another Republican council member opposed to City of Yes derided ADUs as backyard "treehouses" that would depress home values.

In a damp, dungeonlike cell beneath a crumbling military fortress in northeast Queens, Dr. Waheed Bajwa and his team were counting sleeping mosquitoes and trying to divine the future. Soon the mosquitoes would awaken and secrete rafts of goo into puddles of standing water and lay hundreds of eggs onto them that would hatch into larvae that would feed and grow up and mate and lay eggs of their own — until sometime in late summer one of their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-granddaughters would bite a sparrow infected with West Nile virus and then, perhaps, a human. But that day was months off. On this balmy morning in mid-February, Dr. Bajwa, a mild-mannered, methodical, relentless medical entomologist who has spent 21 years heading the city Health Department’s Office of Vector Surveillance and Control, was hoping to find signs that the coming summer would be merciful. Last year saw the highest number of human West Nile cases since 1999, when the virus first appeared in the Western Hemisphere in Queens and killed four New Yorkers.

Federal prosecutors filed criminal charges against Rep. George Santos, CNN and ABC reported Tuesday. A rep for Santos didn't respond to Insider's request for comment. Santos was previously found to have lied about his background during his campaign. CNN reported they were filed under seal and that the New York congressman is expected to appear in federal court as soon as Wednesday. But the revelations about Santos' background convinced many Long Islanders — including local Republicans who had backed his candidacy — to call for his resignation.
CNN —Remains found inside a crocodile in Australia are believed to belong to a 65-year old fisherman who went missing over the weekend, according to local police. The two crocodiles were 4.1 meters (13.5 feet) and 2.8 meters (9.2 feet), police said in a statement. According to DES, the “vast majority” of attacks are carried out by crocodiles larger than two meters (over six feet). Human remains were found within one of the crocodiles, though police officers believe both were involved in the incident with Darmody, the statement added. “There was a noise, a loud yell, and then the sound of the water splashing.”“It’s a national park and there are wild animals up there, wild crocodiles,” he added.
