Drake alleged in a court filing Monday that Universal Music Group and Spotify conspired to “artificially inflate” Lamar’s summer hit “Not Like Us” by using bots, payola, and other tactics. (UMG, a Dutch American-owned company, has no relation to NBC Universal, the parent company of NBC News.) Both Drake and Lamar are signed to UMG, under different different divisions — Drake under Republic Records and Lamar under Interscope. The filing alleged that UMG violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, and engaged in deceptive business practices ad false advertising. “I speak for EVERYONE when i say we stand with UMG Drake acting like a spoilt brat who lost,” one X user said.

Three bodies were recovered on Tuesday morning from a tourist boat which capsized off Egypt's Red Sea coast, and rescue teams were still searching for 13 missing people, the Red Sea provincial governor, Amr Hanafi, told Reuters. The boat, the Sea Story, capsized on Monday near the Sataya Reef, carrying 31 tourists and 13 crew on a multi-day diving trip. Sixteen passengers were believed to have been trapped inside, according to a Red Sea Governorate statement on Monday. The boat, owned by an Egyptian national, was around 100 feet long and had received a one-year safety certificate from the Maritime Safety Authority. Over 18,000 people have registered online to run for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships in Mexico’s contentious new selection process, officials said Monday. The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. According to the plan, evaluation committees will have just over a month to review thousands of resumes and whittle the field to about 10 candidates or less for each of the 881 judgeships and nine seats on the Supreme Court. Some critics argue that the current justice system, which is riddled with nepotism, corruption and a lack of accountability, needs to be changed.

Millions of travelers on Tuesday will battle severe weather and congested highways to reach loved ones for Thanksgiving. The National Weather Service (NWS) said in an update early Monday that a pair of weather systems were expected to bring an "Arctic outbreak" across the Central U.S. Wednesday and into Thanksgiving Thursday. Temperatures in the Northern Great Plains will only reach the high teens and 20s Tuesday and Wednesday, 15-25 degrees lower than the seasonal average. The NWS office for the Twin Cities said that Thursday could see lows of zero to 13 degrees Fahrenheit. Roberto Schmidt / AFP via Getty ImagesAs of 7 a.m. Tuesday, airports seemed to be handling the influx of Thanksgiving travelers; there was only one flight cancellation listed across the country Tuesday morning on FlightAware's Misery Map of airline disruption, with just 55 delays.

The United Nations’ mission to Afghanistan said Tuesday that the ruling Taliban had arbitrarily detained journalists 256 times since their takeover three years ago and urged authorities there to protect the media. In a reply accompanying the report, the Taliban-led foreign ministry denied having arrested that number of journalists and added that those arrested had committed a crime. Journalists in Afghanistan worked under “challenging conditions”, the U.N. mission (UNAMA) and the U.N. Human Rights Office said in a statement. It described the U.N. report as being “far from actual realities” and said security forces were working to protect journalists. The foreign ministry said the arrest figure was “exaggerated” and detentions took place subject to law.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Four members of Pakistan’s security services were killed as thousands of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's supporters broke through government barricades and clashed with law enforcement in the country's capital Islamabad Tuesday. It is extremism,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a separate statement issued by his office. The protests were sparked by demands for Khan’s release from jail and the resignation of the federal government over what they call rigged general elections this year. Interior minister Mohsin Naqvi said Khan’s party rejected a government offer to rally on the outskirts of the city. SYDNEY, Australia — Google and Facebook-owner Meta Platforms urged the Australian government on Tuesday to delay a bill that will ban most forms of social media for children under 16, saying more time is needed to assess its potential impact. Google and Meta said in their submissions that the government should wait for the results of an age-verification trial before going ahead. The age-verification system may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off. “In its present form, the bill is inconsistent and ineffective.”The law would force social media platforms, and not parents or children, to take reasonable steps to ensure age-verification protections are in place. ByteDance’s TikTok said the bill lacked clarity and that it had “significant concerns” with the government’s plan to pass the bill without detailed consultation with experts, social media platforms, mental health organizations and young people.

SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean man hoping to avoid mandatory military service has been convicted after trying to eat his way out of it. He was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, under the Military Service Act, which allows for sentences of up to three years for evading mandatory military service without justifiable cause. The sentences were “relatively lenient” because neither of the men had previous criminal convictions, the court official said. “Most of all,” the official said, the man “accepted his wrongdoing and vowed to serve his military duty sincerely.”The official could not confirm whether the man had started his military service. BOSTON — A Massachusetts man pleaded guilty on Monday to charges that he threatened to kill Jews and bomb a synagogue in a case that U.S. prosecutors said reflected a growing nationwide torrent of antisemitism after the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began last year. John Reardon, during a hearing in Boston federal court, pleaded guilty to threatening to bomb the Congregation Agudas Achim and threatening to kill children in a voicemail he left with the Attleboro, Massachusetts-based synagogue in January. Israel’s 13-month campaign in Gaza has killed more than 44,000 people and displaced nearly all the enclave’s population at least once, according to Gaza officials. In many of those calls, he made harassing or intimidating statements, prosecutors said. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors have agreed to recommend that Reardon, of Millis, Massachusetts, be sentenced to up to 2-1/2 years in prison.

Abortion providers, meanwhile, got an influx of funding that enabled them to set up new clinics and extend hours in states where abortion is still legal. Abortion pills are a target for anti-abortion activists, who hope the incoming administration might revoke provisions that allow the medications to be prescribed via telehealth and mailed nationwide. In 1999, Gomperts founded an organization that transported women from places with restrictions to a ship in international waters to obtain abortions. In 2016, the agency enabled mifepristone — one of the two pills used in medication abortions — to be used up to 10 weeks’ gestation instead of seven. By last year, medication abortions accounted for 63% of abortions nationwide, up from 53% in 2020, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
