Noroviruses have been called “the perfect human pathogens.” They’re a type of highly contagious stomach bug that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, along with headache, fever and body aches. It spreads by direct contact with someone who has norovirus, or by touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your fingers in your mouth. One of the dangers of prolific vomiting and diarrhea is the loss of fluids, which can lead to severe dehydration. Since norovirus can survive temperatures up to 145°F, quick steaming will not kill the virus. Norovirus causes about 200,000 deaths worldwide each year.

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles health officials are investigating a norovirus outbreak after around 80 people were sickened after eating raw oysters at an event to showcase the city’s best restaurants. The Los Angeles County Department of Health said that people got sick after attending an event on Dec. 3, and that oysters have been recalled. Those sickened attended the Los Angeles Times “101 Best Restaurants” event at the Hollywood Palladium, a theater on Sunset Boulevard, the newspaper reported. The Times event was to be attended by the some of the city's best chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants, the newspaper announced in promoting it. The Los Angeles County health department said it is continuing to investigate the outbreak.

One of the patients in the McDonald's outbreak suffered from that condition, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Hedberg is also a member of the McDonald's Food Safety Advisory Council, but said he has not worked with the company on its response to the outbreak. The size of the outbreak "would imply widespread undercooking by many different individual McDonald's restaurants" if beef was the culprit, according to Hedberg. Moderna on Friday said the Food and Drug Administration has delayed the approval of its vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus to the end of May due to "administrative constraints" at the agency. The FDA was expected to make a decision on the RSV shot on Sunday. If cleared, the RSV shot would become the company's second product to launch in the U.S. after its once-blockbuster Covid vaccine.
