And how can people find out what to do — should they go to their primary care provider, urgent care or the hospital’s emergency department? Most healthy people who have mild symptoms like runny nose, congestion and fatigue do not need to seek medical care. CNN: How should people think about when they go to which setting — primary care provider versus urgent care versus the emergency department? If you have a primary care provider, start there if you or a loved one are feeling sick and aren't sure about the next steps. People who are especially vulnerable to severe illness should consider limiting their interactions with others.

Norovirus at seaCDC data suggests the majority of 2024 gastrointestinal outbreaks at sea were associated with the highly contagious norovirus. While norovirus dominates the 2024 CDC data, a September 2024 gastrointestinal outbreak on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas was attributed to salmonella food poisoning. Soeren Stache/picture alliance/Getty Images/FILEThe CDC reported a total of 16 gastrointestinal cruise outbreaks across 2024, the highest in over a decade. While this criteria counts for a lot of the world’s cruise ship fleet, it doesn’t cover every vessel traversing the world’s oceans. “Number two, pay meticulous attention to all the hygienic instructions that you are given on the cruise ship, and pay particular attention to hand hygiene.

Noroviruses have been called “the perfect human pathogens.” They’re a type of highly contagious stomach bug that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, along with headache, fever and body aches. It spreads by direct contact with someone who has norovirus, or by touching contaminated surfaces and then putting your fingers in your mouth. One of the dangers of prolific vomiting and diarrhea is the loss of fluids, which can lead to severe dehydration. Since norovirus can survive temperatures up to 145°F, quick steaming will not kill the virus. Norovirus causes about 200,000 deaths worldwide each year.

New York CNN —Even for a brand as gargantuan as McDonald’s, the last few months have been… a lot. The timing of the outbreak is especially challenging for McDonald’s as it has been trying to win back customers who’ve been put off by higher prices. Over the summer McDonald’s did an about face to try to win people back. “It had been a pretty strong quarter.”And absent the E. coli outbreak, Tuesday’s earnings call might have been all about the value menu and the Crocs. The length and severity of the outbreak is now a wild card for analysts as they assess McDonald’s financial future.

One of the patients in the McDonald's outbreak suffered from that condition, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Hedberg is also a member of the McDonald's Food Safety Advisory Council, but said he has not worked with the company on its response to the outbreak. The size of the outbreak "would imply widespread undercooking by many different individual McDonald's restaurants" if beef was the culprit, according to Hedberg. For example, rival Wendy's dealt with its own link to an E. coli outbreak two years ago. However, that transparency means more media coverage, which reminds consumers about the crisis and risks scaring them away from McDonald's restaurants.

I wanted to know about foodborne illnesses and what can be done to improve food safety practices. And what should people do to reduce their chances of contracting foodborne illnesses? Dr. Leana Wen: There are several bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause foodborne infections. New York CNN —A day after an E. coli outbreak tied to Quarter Pounders in the western part of the United States left one dead and 10 hospitalized, McDonald’s entered full damage-control mode. “We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC’s “Today” Wednesday. Most of the illnesses are in Colorado and Nebraska, and most of the people who fell ill ate Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s. “If there has been contaminated product within our supply chain, it’s very likely worked itself through that supply chain already.”McDonald’s (MCD) stock fell more than 5% at Wednesday — its worst day since the March 2020 Covid lockdown. Chipotle’s outbreak is the worst-case scenario for any restaurant chain, and McDonald’s E. coli situation appears to be limited, at least for now, to a supply issue.

“Zofran girlies rise up.”Seeing that phrase on my screen as I idly scrolled TikTok made me stop and watch the whole video, but probably not for the reasons its creator wanted. Zofran is a drug that prevents nausea and vomiting. I’ve taken it a bunch of times — most memorably at a hospital via IV, when a doctor told me he wanted to “stop the barf cycle” during a bout with norovirus. It also comes in pill form, and it’s often prescribed for cancer patients to offset the side effects of chemotherapy. The Zofran girlies video asserts that “literally everyone” on TikTok is talking about Zofran, because “it’s so hard to get” — a claim I’d never heard before.

For the last two years, we've sent our 10-year-old son to sleepaway camp in California — 3,000 miles and a six-hour flight from our home in New York. The East Coast isn't lacking for overnight camps: camp culture here is stronger than in any other part of the country. Our children are lucky to have first cousins the same ages as them — and unlucky to live a continent apart. An entire summer apart? But it's no less true for modern parents fortunate enough to ship their kids off to summer camp or for their kids.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved Moderna's vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus for adults ages 60 and above, the company's second-ever product to enter the U.S. market. The approval of Moderna's shot is based on a late-stage trial on older adults, who are more vulnerable to severe cases of RSV. The company's shot is also the only RSV vaccine to be available in a pre-filled syringe, which is designed to make it easier to administer to patients. An advisory panel to the CDC will vote in June on recommendations for the use and intended population of Moderna's shot. Moderna's full-year 2024 sales guidance of roughly $4 billion includes revenue from its RSV vaccine.

Moderna on Friday said the Food and Drug Administration has delayed the approval of its vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus to the end of May due to "administrative constraints" at the agency. The FDA was expected to make a decision on the RSV shot on Sunday. If cleared, the RSV shot would become the company's second product to launch in the U.S. after its once-blockbuster Covid vaccine. It would also be the third RSV vaccine to enter the market after shots from Pfizer and GSK rolled out last year. Moderna said its RSV vaccine is still on track to be reviewed by an advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during a meeting on June 26 and 27.

Food workers wash their hands as they should only one in three times, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The consequence: Germs spread from food workers’ hands to food, which can trigger an outbreak of dangerous foodborne illness in restaurants. By improving handwashing practices, food workers can be a critical part to preventing outbreaks of diseases like norovirus, Salmonella, and E. coli, it said. “In all circumstances, thorough, frequent hand hygiene is critical for preventing the spread of disease. Technology can potentially assist with increasing compliance and quality of hand hygiene, and that is very exciting indeed,” she said.
