Former U.S. President Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in this week's election has raised questions about how Asia will be impacted. "When passed, the [tariffs] will sweep across Asia, particularly China [and] should spike volatility and compress multiples as uncertainty prevails." Even so, the analysts say the region is "more prepared than in 2016" and investment opportunities remain, especially given the weaker yen and stimulus in China. This will bring about "structural shifts in global supply chain ... [and] could boost infrastructure spending in ASEAN and South Asia," he added. The currency has fallen versus the dollar following Trump's win, hitting 154.7 per dollar on Wednesday — its weakest level since July 30.

Global trade changed considerably over the past four years — benefiting India — as President Joe Biden retained much of Trump's tariffs on China. EnergyOn the one hand, analysts expect Indian interests to be aligned with those of the United States regarding oil prices . Trump's previous term in office, whether intentionally or coincidently, saw moderate to low oil prices. As India imports over 90% of its oil needs, New Delhi will likely welcome any move by the U.S. to keep oil prices low. A quick resolution of the war in Ukraine — Trump's campaign promise — would also prove to be negative for oil prices.

Currently, more than 80% of India's energy needs are met by coal, oil and solid biomass, according to the International Energy Agency. On the demand side, the Indian government has aggressively pushed policies that favor vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), a derivative of liquified natural gas (LNG). Meanwhile, the number of households that could receive piped natural gas is more than 300 million. For instance, natural gas is a crucial ingredient for making fertilizers, and manufacturing it domestically helps increase food security. Seth is also optimistic about India's growth rate for its third and fourth quarters despite slower capital expenditure in some states.

Shares of carmaker Hyundai 's Indian subsidiary started trading this week with much anticipation, only to drop by some 7% on its debut. Despite such success, it appears as if the stock market has given Hyundai the cold shoulder this week. First, the money raised by the stock market listing is being fed back to Hyundai's Korean parent. With the listing, the Indian subsidiary now commands nearly half the market capitalization of its Korean parent. However, the Indian subsidiary must now pay a flat 3.5% of total revenue going forward.

China's CSI 300 index has gained about 25% since the stimulus measures were announced. That would depend on whether the measures announced will likely target China's stock market or the real economy. Even if China's economy improves and its stock market soars, experts suggest it's unlikely to hurt the Indian equity market's growth outlook over the long term. For now, a strong and rapidly growing economy, as well as a "resilient" domestic investor base, continue to be significant drivers of Indian stock markets, according to Wall Street's observers. "The Indian market has numerous positive domestic drivers which underpin our overweight recommendation," Morgan Stanley's Jonathan Garner said in a note to clients this week.

The rise and fall of the "Nifty Fifty" stocks in the 1970s is a cautionary tale for investors in the Magnificent Seven craze, according to BCA Research. The "Nifty Fifty" refers to a loose group of stocks including Coca-Cola , IBM , Xerox and Pfizer , that rose to prominence in the 1970 to 1973 bull market. The comments from BCA come as the Magnificent Seven stocks continue powering the market to new heights despite a modest pullback this summer. India's economic growth story is a stunning one — but the question of where investors should park their money is not always straightforward, with one Blackstone executive highlighting a common mistake. However, focusing too much on the macro story can be dangerous for investors, according to Blackstone Private Equity's head of Asia, Amit Dixit. I think you go to India for the macro, everybody knows," Dixit said at the Milken Institute's recent Asia Summit in Singapore. While the list of companies Blackstone invests in India are extensive, he spotlighted the likes of information technology service firm Mphasis , IT service management company R Systems and automotive components manufacturer Sona Comstar . This photograph taken on April 6, 2022, shows a general view of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) plant in Dadri. The mounds of jet-black coal shimmering under the afternoon sun at the Dadri power plant are a raw illustration of India's coal dependence -- a habit that despite increasing pressure, the country is finding hard to kick. India's NTPC Green Energy filed draft papers for a 100 billion rupees ($1.19 billion) initial public offering on Wednesday, as it looks to cash in on the country's renewables expansion plans and a red-hot equities market. The company, a unit of state-owned power producer NTPC , will only issue new shares, and existing shareholders will not sell any stake, the draft papers showed. So far this year, about 235 companies have gone public and raised more than $8.6 billion, which exceeds the total amount raised last year.

Historically, a rate cut has been a signal for central banks in emerging markets, like India, to follow by easing monetary policy in their regions. The latest data shows that the inflation rate appears to be heading in the wrong direction in India. The headline inflation rate rose in August to 3.65% compared to 3.6% in the previous month. Instead, markets have simply hit snooze on a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India for the moment. If there's no global recession, a risk-on sentiment will likely help push up emerging market equities in the medium term after the U.S. central bank cuts rates.
