“Life expectancy in Italy is 82.7 years, while in the US it’s 79,” he says. For Thomas, life in Latronico fits in with his artistic philosophy. Slower pace of lifeThomas was influenced by the region’s healthier, slower-paced lifestyle and hopes that living here will increase his life expectancy. Thomas hopes to transform the second “move-in-ready” home into a multi-purpose arts complex, with accommodations for visiting international youth and adult artists. “In Latronico, I can do both.”While he says he loves Latronico, Thomas has discovered that life in a remote rural village in southern Italy isn’t always as idyllic as it seems.

Caleb Carr, Author of Dark Histories, Dies at 68

Caleb Carr, a military historian and author whose experience of childhood abuse drove him to explore the roots of violence — most famously in his 1994 best seller, “The Alienist,” a period thriller about the hunt for a serial killer in 19th-century Manhattan — died on Thursday at his home in Cherry Plains, N.Y. The cause was cancer, his brother Ethan Carr said. Mr. Carr had first pitched the book as nonfiction; it wasn’t, but it read that way because of the exhaustive research he did into the period. And he peopled his novel with historical figures like Theodore Roosevelt, who was New York’s reforming police commissioner before his years in the White House. Up to that point, Mr. Carr had been writing, with modest success, on military matters.

“I had been to various countries in the European Union on several occasions but never Italy, though it was on my list. Millet says that he began planning to travel to Italy to buy a house back in 2019, but was thwarted by Covid-19. “The prices of the houses were super-attractive, especially coming from the Los Angeles area, and the Latronico properties were for the most part in good shape. “At the end of the day, I bought my place and began thinking about renovations and the future,” he adds. CNN —Buyers from all over the world are snapping up charming old houses in isolated villages in Italy. Chicago-based saxophonist Joshua Shapiro, 48, embarked on the quest for la dolce vita as the first step toward a change of life. Many empty homes featured on the local website where owners meet buyers are sold or rented with furniture, but what eventually ends up being left inside is usually negotiated between parties. Courtesy Joshua ShapiroThere was also a bizarre encounter when he first went to take a peek inside the house he had just bought. Accompanied by Castellano, the deputy mayor, Shapiro says he was surprised to find it had tenants inside – a group of elderly nuns.

Weeks after Maria Sandomenico’s Chihuahua, Luigi, died last August, she shared a long post in a Facebook group for residents of the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn about how she was struggling to come to terms with her adopted rescue dog’s passing. In an interview in January, Ms. Sandomenico said that in the seven years she had lived with Luigi, he had become her “north star,” trotting by her side in various custom-made clothes she had bought him. A pink and black pompom hat was his signature look, though he was also known to wear cashmere. Ms. Sandomenico said she turned to Facebook when Luigi died because she didn’t want to burden her friends with her feelings, and because she craved connection with others who had experienced the death of a pet. She was surprised by how many people responded to her post saying they were also grieving the loss of an animal companion and didn’t know where to find support.

“And it was like, huh!”When a smaller restaurant unexpectedly goes viral on TikTok or other social media, the sudden demand can be overwhelming. But savvy business owners who are able to adapt can parlay newfound fame into a lasting boost for their business. Elreda now has 10 locations, including newly opened restaurants in Detroit and Brooklyn — an expansion started by one viral video. “But it’s a good tired.”One person who knows about going viral is Dominique Ansel. In 2013, before most people knew the term “going viral,” the French pastry chef created the “Cronut,” a cross between a croissant and a doughnut, at his newly opened New York bakery.

We were in Churchill, a town of roughly 900 people nicknamed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World,” in Canada’s Manitoba province. A male polar bear rests during a Tundra Buggy ride into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area in August. People have to learn to co-exist with polar bears in Churchill, where some of them stay waiting for sea ice to refreeze. Hudson Bay polar bears are among the most vulnerable on Earth because of loss of sea ice, with their numbers in sharp decline. They arrive as soon as the sea ice breaks up to feast on small fish called capelin that spawn here.

In New Zealand, one of summer’s great pleasures is known as real fruit ice cream: a scoop of vanilla blended with fruit in a machine that produces an airy, barely sweet twirl with a buttery texture. In the United States, it’s just beginning to catch on in cities like Boston, Portland, Ore., and Austin, Texas. But along the way, the no-frills treat has undergone a full-bore makeover. At most American shops that sell it, real fruit ice cream can be mixed with graham crackers and Oreos; drizzled with hot fudge, caramel or chamoy; and enjoyed atop a chocolate- and sprinkle-dipped cone. (“It’s almost healthy” is the unofficial slogan at Nico’s Real Fruit Ice Cream in Portland, Ore.)

Exploring the Majesty and Mystery of Sor Juana in Dance

She bends her back deeply and twists on the floor as the people around her watch, curious but withdrawn. As couples pass by, the dancer leaps and rolls, flying and landing heavily, looking side to side as if seeking refuge. Sor Juana’s life is the subject of a new work by the choreographer Michelle Manzanales that premieres on June 1, during Ballet Hispánico’s season at the New York City Center. Sor Juana, born out of wedlock into a deeply patriarchal society, chose the convent over marriage and domesticity. She is intriguing not only because of her extraordinary achievement but because not much is known about her beyond the few clues she left in her writing.
Facial recognition software immediately identifies the man as … a giraffe? While there, she read about how tenants in Brooklyn had fought back against their landlord’s plans to install a facial recognition entry system for their building. “This was the first time I heard about facial recognition,” she says. Whichever route they took, they had to test the images on a well-known object detection system called YOLO, one of the most commonly-used algorithms in facial recognition software. At the recent World Cup in Qatar, creative agency Virtue Worldwide came up with flag-themed face paint for fans seeking to fool the emirate’s legion of facial recognition cameras.
