CNN —On any other afternoon at any other tournament, Adam Hadwin’s seventh hole would have served up the most surreal scenes of the day. During the second round of the PGA Championship though, it was just another hole. Having lost his club to the waters of Kentucky’s Valhalla Golf Club on Friday, the Canadian golfer stood by as one overzealous fan took the plunge to return it to him. Yet there was no happy ending to the hole for Hadwin, who went on to make bogey on the par-five. How exactly the club ended up in the lake remains unclear, but the one-time PGA Tour winner has previous.

CNN —Golfer Adam Hadwin had built a superb reputation for staying dry at The Players Championship. On Thursday, the water took its long-awaited revenge by claiming two of his balls – and even a club. Across more than four decades, hundreds of the PGA Tour’s finest players have watched in horror as their tee shot splashed into the lake at TPC Sawgrass’ iconic par-three 17th hole. Yet on all of his 28 previous visits to the penultimate tee at the ‘fifth major’, Canada’s Hadwin had safely found the island green. Ten players had found the lake from the tee during the first round, though New Zealand’s Ryan Fox aced the hole, becoming the 14th golfer in Players history to do so.

Hadwin was quickly helped back to his feet, with footage showing him stood arm in arm with the security guard shortly after. A security guard stops Hadwin as Taylor celebrates. It put him level at the top of the leaderboard with England’s Tommy Fleetwood, in pursuit of a first PGA Tour title. That sent the pair into the first PGA Tour playoffs of their careers, and after three holes, they still could not be separated. A remarkable uphill putt saw Taylor eagle for the win to become the first Canadian since Pat Fletcher in 1954, and the sixth in history, to win his country’s National Open.
