CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday pointed to three media stocks poised to do well in what now promises to be a tight presidential race: Fox , The New York Times and Nexstar . Cramer also recommended The New York Times, saying a close election or a win by Donald Trump would boost the stock. Shares of the media company rallied more than 338% from Election Day in 2016 to President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021, according to FactSet. Nexstar could also benefit from a close election, Cramer said, but with the caveat that the company is "more of a trade than an investment." To Cramer, the company is small enough that the "influx of ad dollars has the potential to move the needle."

Advertising and marketing pros made up 7% of CES' attendees in 2023, per CES. It is also not known whether Burry still holds the position or whether it's some sort of hedge against a long position. Those positions were winners for Burry as the stock market finished the third quarter lower. Burry is one of several hedge fund managers who correctly identified the housing bubble ahead of the 2008 financial crisis. Burry closed his previous hedge fund, known as Scion Capital Management, after the financial crisis. The hedge fund filings do not show all types of derivatives or private investments, so the full scope of Burry's positions are unknown.

After the September meeting pause last week, the target range for the fed funds rate remained at 5.25% to 5.50%. At the same time, legacy media companies face off against another well-known demon: cord-cutting. Technology companies such as Apple and Amazon can lean on their respective hardware and e-commerce businesses, said Paul Fanelli, a research analyst at Gabelli Funds. Even so, Wall Street sees only a handful of pure-play winners in the TV and streaming space winning consumer attention over the long run. Already, the technology companies have shown some promise. Consumers are increasingly forgoing pay TV packages from cable companies and opting for bundles from companies like Alphabet, he said.

CNN —DirecTV and Nexstar announced Monday that they had largely resolved a bitter carriage dispute that had left millions of the satellite carrier’s subscribers unable to access local television giant Nexstar’s large array of channels. The deal to end the blackout, which began in July and stretched for more than 75 days, comes one week after Disney and Charter also agreed to resolve a dispute that resulted in ABC-owned stations and ESPN being yanked from the cable provider’s lineup. While most of Nexstar’s stations will be covered under the new multi-year agreement, DirecTV said 27 stations controlled by Nexstar, but owned by another company, will not fall under the umbrella. DirecTV chief executive Bill Morrow alluded to the trend in a note to customers on Monday. “Unfortunately, over the past decade-plus access to your programming has become a battleground for networks and stations to try to drive up higher rates,” Morrow said.

Disney 's motivation to potentially sell ABC and its owned affiliates, linear cable networks and a minority stake in ESPN isn't predicated on what these assets will fetch in a sale. It's about signaling to investors the time has come to stop thinking about Disney as old media. Rather, a sale of ABC and linear cable networks would be a message to the investment community: The era of traditional TV is over. "Disney almost has a good bank and a bad bank at this point," Wells Fargo analyst Steven Cahall said in a CNBC interview. Nexstar has held preliminary conversations with Disney to acquire ABC and its owned and operated affiliates, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday gave investors tips for what to focus on during the coming week, highlighting the Federal Reserve's Wednesday decision on interest rate hikes for the rest of the year. Disney is in talks to sell ABC to Nexstar, Bloomberg first reported. But the reported talks are another sign that Iger means business when it comes to Disney's streaming future. The company's direct-to-consumer business reported a loss of $2.2 billion in the first nine months of the year — 12% less than during the same period last year. But even if he does sell ABC — and manages to get a good price for it, despite its ominous future — his challenges are far from over.
