Comcast announced a plan Wednesday to spin off most of its cable television networks into a separate publicly traded company. CNN —United States envoy Amos Hochstein is due to visit Beirut “imminently” after Lebanon responded “positively” to a US-backed proposal to stop the Israel-Hezbollah war, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Monday. US ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson relayed the proposal to the Lebanese government via Nabih Berri, the parliament speaker, on Thursday night, a Lebanese official told CNN earlier. CNN —A man has died and up to nine other people are missing after a 10-story hotel collapsed in Argentina. Firefighters, paramedics and police were working to remove debris in order to reach people who are thought to be buried. The victim is thought to have been an 80-year-old man who lived in the building next to the collapsed hotel, minister of security of the province of Buenos Aires Javier Alonso said on the TN news channel. The missing include workers from a construction site at the hotel that was apparently operating “clandestinely, without complying with municipal regulations,” according to the statement. Emergency workers are trying to free up to nine people believed to be trapped in the rubble.

Knife-wielding prisoners identifying themselves as Islamic State group militants staged a bloody attack on guards in a Russian penal colony on Friday and seized hostages, according to state media and news outlets with ties to the security services. Russian state media said at least one member of the prison staff had been killed, but the video suggested the death toll was almost certainly higher. The prison service said in a statement: “During a session of a disciplinary commission, convicts took staff of the penal institution as hostages. There are casualties.”The prison is designated as a “harsh regime” penal colony with capacity to hold up to 1,241 male prisoners. In June, a bloody ISIS-linked prison uprising took place in the southern region of Rostov, where special forces shot dead six inmates who had taken hostages.

Federal prosecutors have criminally charged the well-known short seller and analyst Andrew Left with securities fraud related to allegedly using his public platform to illegally profit to the tune of at least $16 million from manipulating stock market activity contrary to positions he presented to the public from 2018 through 2023. The indictment notes that Left is a frequent guest commentator on CNBC and other business cable news channels. Prosecutors said that Left used Citron's online platform to comment on publicly traded companies and claim that their stock was incorrectly valued by the market. Left, who previously lived in Beverly Hills, California, is charged in the indictment with one count of engaging in a securities fraud scheme, 17 counts of securities fraud, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. If convicted, he would face a maximum possible sentence of 25 years in prison for the securities fraud scheme alone.
