The annual Florida Python Challenge has slithered to its conclusion, with professionally-categorized python purger Ronald Kiger crowned its victor after removing 20 Burmese pythons from the Florida Everglades. The commission revealed 195 Burmese pythons were successfully removed from the wild during the challenge. The hunt is designed to bring awareness to the invasive threat of the Burmese python species in Florida. These snakes are found primarily in and around the Everglades ecosystem in South Florida, where they prey on birds, mammals and other reptiles. Burmese pythons can spread diseases amongst native animals, affect native snakes and have high mercury levels that are dangerous for human consumption.

A luxury hotel in Paris has responded after Serena Williams publicly criticized it for refusing service to her and her kids during the 2024 Olympics. On Monday, the tennis star shared a photo of The Peninsula Hotel with a caption describing her experience. "Yikes @peninsulaparis I've been denied access to rooftop to eat in an empty restaurant of nicer places but never with my kids," Williams wrote. "Dear Mrs. Williams, Please accept our deepest apologies for the disappointment you encountered tonight," the hotel said in a reply to Williams' post. One comment pointed out that the rooftop restaurant did not even take reservations, according to the Peninsula's website.

Stocks sold off Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling nearly 500 points, as investors’ fears over a recession surfaced. The 10-year Treasury yield broke below 4% for the first time since February in a sign that more investors were seeking safe-haven assets. That weak data comes a day after the Fed chose to keep rates at the highest levels in two decades. “The economic data keep rolling on in the direction of a downturn, if not recession, this morning,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS, a financial market research company. The S&P 500 is still up about 14% for the year, coming off its eighth-positive month in the last nine in July.

FTX has recovered over $5 billion worth of liquid assets, including cash and digital assets, attorneys in Delaware bankruptcy court said during an FTX bankruptcy hearing Wednesday. The news comes after federal prosecutors announced plans to seize at least $500 million worth of FTX-connected assets as part of their ongoing prosecution of FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried. FTX’s new CEO, John J. Ray, previously attested that at least $8 billion of customer assets were unaccounted for in the “worst” case of corporate control he’d ever seen. Sam Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty in New York federal court Tuesday to eight charges related to the collapse of his former crypto exchange FTX and hedge fund Alameda Research. The onetime crypto billionaire was indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and securities fraud, individual charges of securities fraud and wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to avoid campaign finance regulations. Federal prosecutors also announced the launch of a new task force to recover victim assets as part of an ongoing investigation into Bankman-Fried and the collapse of FTX. Federal prosecutors built the indictment against Bankman-Fried with unusual speed, packaging together the criminal charges against the 30-year-old in a matter of weeks. The federal charges came alongside complaints from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The S&P 500 shed 0.25% to end at 3,839.50. The S&P 500 sank 19.4%, and is more than 20% below its record high, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq tumbled 33.1%. FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried, who is accused of misappropriating billions of dollars deposited in the crypto currency exchange, will be released on $250 million personal recognizance bond, a federal judge in New York ruled Thursday. Bankman-Fried, wearing a dark blue suit and tan shoes, walked into court with shackles around his ankles. A recognizance bond is a written commitment from the accused to appear in court when ordered. The Trump administration gave several towns relying on oil, gas and coal a boost by cutting royalty payments and expanding projects. East Carbon is a coal town, one of only a few hundred still hanging on. Emery County Coal Resources, which is a subsidiary of American Consolidated Natural Resources, owns Lila Canyon Mine and did not reply to several requests for comment. Utah relies heavily on coal for energy: 61% of the state’s electricity net generation came from coal-fired plants. But Porter said Emery County Coal Resources, the company that runs the mine, has a solid plan to extinguish it.
Days before FTX’s bankruptcy filing last month, co-CEO Ryan Salame told Bahamian authorities that founder Sam Bankman-Fried may have committed fraud by sending customer money from the crypto exchange to his other firm, Alameda Research. According to a filing on Wednesday tied to FTX’s bankruptcy proceedings, Salame disclosed “possible mishandling of clients’ assets” by Bankman-Fried. FTX declared bankruptcy on Nov. 11. The indictment, unsealed on Tuesday, charged Bankman-Fried with eight criminal counts related to fraud, money laundering and improper use of customer funds. Like Bankman-Fried, Salame was a significant political donor, donating $20 million to Republican causes.

Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recently said he plans to give away the “majority” of his fortune. Bezos’ comments were made in an interview with CNN on Saturday, when he said he plans to use his wealth to fight climate change and to support societal “unifiers.” Bezos is worth about $124 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. “The hard part is figuring out how to do it in a levered way,” Bezos told CNN. The Giving Pledge was started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Bezos committed $10 billion dollars to the Bezos Earth Fund in 2020, and by October 2021 had given away $947 million through the same.

He believes those areas with higher numbers of digital nomads are already economically out of reach for most of the locals.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 713 points, or 2.4%, falling below 30,000 to a new low for the year. The 30-stock index is now down 20% from its high, known as bear market territory on Wall Street. The S&P 500 fell 2.5% and headed of a new 2022 closing low, while the Nasdaq Composite slid about 2.5%. Goldman Sachs cut its year-end S&P 500 target because of rising rates, predicting at least 4% downside from here. Rates marched higher as equities fell, with the yield on the 2-year Treasury note notching a fresh high dating back to late 2007. Tuesday’s move followed a choppy trading session that saw stocks rise in the afternoon and snap a two-day losing streak.
