It's been a year since New York City began enforcing its near-ban on short-term rentals, including Airbnbs. While the number of short-term rentals has plummeted, the effect on the housing market is unclear. In September 2023, NYC began enforcing new regulations — known as Local Law 18 or LL18 — that severely restricted short-term rentals. With so many Airbnbs out of the short-term rental picture, they've been able to charge more.

The NYPD on Friday released body-worn camera footage from a weekend shooting at a Brooklyn subway station that started as a confrontation between police and an apparent fare-beater who they have said charged at officers with a knife. According to police and surveillance video from the station, Mickles jumped a turnstile at the subway station just after 3 p.m. Sunday, right in front of two officers. When a train pulls into the station, Mickles backs onto it once the doors open. All shots were fired by NYPD officers, authorities have said. “There was no need for any bullets to fly in the subway station, especially in a setting where the officers put innocent bystanders at risk.

“You support killing little children,” Seldowitz says to the vendor in one video. In another video, Seldowitz asks the man whether he’s familiar with Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, better known as the Mukhabarat. When asked via email for additional comment on the videos, Seldowitz said, “Happy to talk (Wednesday). Mohamed Attia, of the Street Vendor Project, said the vendor told him he did not instigate the conversation with Seldowitz. New York City Mayor Eric Adams told reporters Thursday that police would do extra patrols in some city neighborhoods and send additional resources to schools and houses of worship.
