Read previewMartin Luther King, Jr. once said: "The quality, not the longevity, of one's life is what is important." But at 96 years old, my great-aunt Mary Selby Ferrari is living proof that you can have both — a long and full life. Ferrari, meanwhile, still lives on her own in the independent-living section of a retirement community. She makes it a point to stay informed"I used to be a great reader," Ferrari told me. And she hit the genetic jackpotIt would be impossible to talk about Ferrari's long life without addressing her mother's centenarian status.

Advertisement"He was recruited by AIPAC to run against us because we called for a permanent cease-fire," Bowman said of Latimer. In January, Bowman lost the support of the liberal pro-Israel group J Street over his rhetoric on Israel. Like Bowman, Latimer has a blunt and direct speaking style that sometimes leades to gaffes, such as his invocation of the racist lynching of Emmett Till when commenting on the sexual misconduct allegations against then-Gov. When asked about Bowman's charge of racism, Latimer pointed to his appointment of Ken Jenkins, a Black man, as his deputy county executive. Bowman and Latimer have known each other for nearly four years, first meeting for coffee after the congressman's 2020 primary victory.

‘Challengers’ Review: Game, Set, Love Matches

Guadagnino’s latest, “Challengers,” is about a continually changing love triangle involving two besotted men and a sharp, beautiful woman with killer instincts and personal style. Written by the novelist and playwright Justin Kuritzkes, “Challengers” is fairly straightforward despite its self-consciously tortured narrative timeline. It tracks three tennis prodigies — friends, lovers and foes — across the years through their triumphs and defeats, some shared. A rich boy who cosplays as poor (well, at least struggling), Patrick met Art when they were children at a tennis academy. It’s at that point that they met Tashi, then a fast-rocketing star.

Marlena Shaw, the jazz and R&B vocalist whose “California Soul” was one of the defining soul songs of the late 1960s, has died. “It’s with a very heavy heart for myself and my family I announce that our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist Marlena Shaw has passed away today at 12:03,” Bradshaw said in the video. Shaw, a charismatic and wide-ranging vocalist, was best known for 1969's “California Soul,” which has endured as a widely popular and often sampled song. Shaw, who had five children, toured for more than 50 years and put out 17 albums across eight different labels. “We are saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose ‘California Soul’ is as popular today as it ever was and whose album ‘It Is Love: Recorded Live At Vine St.’ helped relaunch the Verve label in 1987.”

Frances Sternhagen, the Tony Award-winning actress who played leading roles in stage productions of “Driving Miss Daisy” and “On Golden Pond” as formidable older women when she was so young that she had to wear aging makeup, died on Monday at her home in New Rochelle, N.Y. She was 93. Ms. Sternhagen won Tonys as featured actress in a play for her performances in two very different productions. In a 1995 Broadway revival of “The Heiress,” based on Henry James’s novel “Washington Square,” she was Cherry Jones’s well-meaning, matchmaking Aunt Lavinia. In “The Good Doctor,” Neil Simon’s 1973 take on Chekhov, she played multiple roles in comedy sketches. She received Tony nominations for her roles in the original productions of “On Golden Pond,” “Equus” and the musical “Angel” and in revivals of “Morning’s at Seven” and “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Roundtree, the trailblazing actor who starred as the ultra-smooth private detective in several “Shaft” films beginning in the early 1970s, has died. Roundtree’s “Shaft” was part of a change in how Black movies were viewed in Hollywood, which failed to consider Black actors – especially for leading roles — in projects at the time. Isaac Hayes’ “Shaft” theme song — which included the line “You a bad mother— (Shut your mouth)” — helped insinuate the original movie into the pop-cult consciousness. After the film’s success, Roundtree returned in sequels “Shaft’s Big Score” in 1972 and “Shaft in Africa” in 1973. Roundtree reprised his role in the 2000 “Shaft” film, a revival that starred Samuel L. Jackson.

New Roche CEO Thomas Schinecker is keen to restore Roche's battered drug development record after major late-stage trial setbacks in the areas of Alzheimer's and cancer immunotherapy last year. The acquired drug, against inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, belongs to a class of new treatments known as anti-TL1A antibodies which has attracted major deal activity in the pharma industry. Merck & Co (MRK.N) in April agreed to buy anti-TL1A antibody developer Prometheus Biosciences for $10.8 billion. Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of chronic gastrointestinal disorders with almost 8 million people diagnosed worldwide and 80% of all individuals not experiencing lasting remission, Roche said. "We strongly believe this novel TL1A directed antibody has the transformational potential to make a significant difference for patients living with inflammatory bowel disease and potentially other diseases," said Roche CEO Schinecker.

It was shortly after 4 p.m. on a sweltering, sunny Thursday — Aug. 14, 2003 — when the power went out in eight states across the Northeast and Midwest. Sara Hasson was in her bridal suite at a Hyatt hotel in Greenwich, Conn., getting her hair blown out. Dustin Schell was celebrating at a bar after witnessing his friends’ ceremony at City Hall in Manhattan. Dr. Kelvin Chan was running last-minute errands in preparation for his wedding in Toronto the next day. And Dr. Dvasha Stollman was in the middle of putting on her poofy, tulle-layered white gown in New Rochelle, N.Y.“I had no idea what was going on,” Dr. Stollman said.

Single-family homes in Arlington, Massachusetts. Around 75% of residential land in the United States is zoned for single-family homes only. This has had the effect of encouraging ever-larger single-family homes and limiting housing options, like smaller houses. “You can’t just do it all with zoning reform,” Walla Walla City Manager Elizabeth Chamberlain told CNN. The second wave of single-family zoning laws spread during the 1970s, historians say, and the policies became more restrictive.

It’s impossible for Raymond Fowler to explain how it felt to learn a police officer shot his only son after he was accused of taking a few dollars’ worth of fruit, he said. “Words can’t describe the moment when I heard what happened,” Mr. Fowler said. He was accused of eating a few grapes and a banana and leaving without paying, the lawyer representing Mr. Garris’s family said. The New Rochelle Police Department said Mr. Garris was shot when he tried to grab a gun from an officer’s holster. It released body camera footage that shows the events leading up to the shooting but cuts off before it takes place.

Dianne Cox and Michael Cammer don’t particularly like being married, which is not to say they dislike it. “We’re happy together,” Mr. Cammer said. A happy couple gets married and it doesn’t screw up their relationship.” Neither ever bought into the idea that love and marriage were a package deal, or that one should automatically lead to the other. Dr. Cox and Mr. Cammer are scientists, which might explain their ultrarational approach toward their relationship.
