(AP) — North Carolina Black and Latino voters sued in federal court on Monday seeking to strike down congressional districts drawn this fall by Republican state legislators that they argue weaken minority voting power in violation of the U.S. Constitution. Under the iteration of the congressional map that had been drawn by state judges for the 2022 elections, Democrats and Republicans each won seven seats. Meanwhile, the number of minority voters grows in the 12th, which is represented by Rep. Alma Adams of Charlotte. Rep. Jeff Jackson, a Mecklenburg County Democrat, already said he’s running for state attorney general, saying he can’t win reelection under the new congressional map. The latest congressional map “continues North Carolina’s long tradition of enacting redistricting plans that pack and crack minority voters into gerrymandered districts designed to minimize their voting strength," the plaintiffs' lawyers write.

A new North Carolina neighborhood will require residents to fly the US flag. Developer Brock Fankhauser said the community isn't aligned with a political party, local media reported. Homeowners in the new 1776 Gastonia neighborhood, named after its affinity for the country's founding and its locale in Gastonia, North Carolina, will be required to display the American flag in front of their property. "We're handling the American flag like an architectural element," Fankhauser said, per WCNC. The movement is not aligned with any political party, Fankhauser said.

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Walmart for firing a North Carolina employee with Crohn's disease after the retail giant allegedly refused to grant her disability-related leave. The EEOC's complaint, filed in Charlotte federal court, accuses Walmart of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act in its treatment of deli worker Adrian Tucker. Tucker worked for Walmart between February 2014 and April 2017 at its Statesville store. According to the complaint, Tucker suffers from Crohn's disease, a chronic bowel condition that causes inflammation of the digestive tract, which can lead to stomach cramps, dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea. The EEOC alleges Walmart refused to provide reasonable accommodation to her when she experienced symptoms multiple times between November 2016 and April 2017.
