"It was apparent that the man had suffered a significant fall in icy terrain," the department said in a statement. The glade is near state-run Cannon Mountain, a historic ski resort scheduled to open for the season on Friday. Search-and-rescue crews bushwhacking through cold, mountainous terrain came upon the hiker's body within Saturday's first hour on Kinsman Ridge, a feature that leads to Cannon Mountain, the department said. Conditions over the weekend were cold enough to welcome 8 inches of new snow, according to Cannon Mountain's daily weather report on Monday. "Winter conditions have arrived in the mountains, and hikers are encouraged to be prepared for their trek," the Fish and Game Department said.

Here’s a look at what’s happening at the northern U.S. border. Illegal crossings have risen sharply but remain far below those at the southern border. Border agents made more than 23,000 arrests at the northern border from October 2023 through September, the 2024 fiscal year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. That number has risen in recent years, from just over 2,000 in the 2022 fiscal year and around 10,000 in the 2023 fiscal year. Most of the arrests took place in part of the northern border known as the Swanton Sector, an area between Quebec and Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York.

(AP) – Fred Harris, a former US senator from Oklahoma, presidential hopeful and populist who championed Democratic Party reforms in the turbulent 1960s, died Saturday. “I think it’s worked wonderfully,” Harris recalled in 2004, when he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Boston. “It’s made the selection much more legitimate and democratic.”“The Democratic Party was not democratic, and many of the delegations were pretty much boss-controlled or -dominated. Harris ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976, quitting after poor showings in early contests, including a fourth-place win in New Hampshire. A user showed pictures on a Facebook from a Stop & Shop in Pittsfield, Massachusetts with rows of empty shelves and wrote “Avoid Stop and Shop… their shelves are empty.” A user on TikTok posted a video with over 40 thousand views of the empty shelves in a Stop & Shop in South Boston. Many in the comments of both posts said they had been confronted with similar scenes at other Stop & Shop locations. “Stop & Shop is well stocked with turkeys and hams for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, along with staples like potatoes, gravy, and stuffing,” she said.

But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most liberal areas is particularly notable. For example, in Fulton County, which contains most of Atlanta, Ms. Harris gained about 4,500 votes, but Mr. Trump gained more than 7,400. He similarly outran Ms. Harris where she made gains in Wake County, N.C., Lancaster County, Pa., and Montgomery County, Texas. In Milwaukee County in swing-state Wisconsin, Ms. Harris lost 1,200 voters compared with Mr. Biden’s total in 2020, while Mr. Trump gained more than 3,500. But he lost votes, as did Ms. Harris, in majority-Black counties, especially those in the South where turnout dropped overall.

The Republican document said the executive order contained “radical leftwing ideas” that hindered innovation. The most advanced AI systems could, in the worst case, “pose an extinction-level threat to the human species,” the report said. A related document said AI systems could be used to implement “high-impact cyberattacks capable of crippling critical infrastructure,” among a litany of risks. However, he worries that a repeal of Biden’s executive order would spell the end of the US government’s AI Safety Institute. It is possible that that would be the subject of a future Trump executive order,” said Strait.

The race for Democratic Party chair has officially launched with a onetime Maryland governor and unsuccessful presidential candidate Martin O'Malley announcing a bid to take the reins. The contest comes as former DNC Chair Jaime Harrison is leaving his post. When a man arrived at a New Hampshire animal shelter last week claiming he wanted to surrender 150 pet mice, the shelter was ready to take them in. But the problem soon became much more mouse-ive when he clarified that he had 150 tubs full of mice to surrender, not 150 individual rodents. The overwhelmed mouse owner initially brought 73 mice last Monday, the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said in a Thursday news release. The shelter said they expect the number of mice to grow to nearly 1,000. These are pet mice, or "fancy mice," the shelter confirmed in the release.

Many people feel “that they’re not getting enough back, that a college education isn’t worth enough,” said Paul Peterson, a professor of education policy and governance at Harvard University. CNN —When an overwhelmed man came to a New Hampshire animal shelter last week hoping to surrender 150 mice, shelter employees were ready to assist. It took months for Democrats to settle on their primary presidential calendar, an extended battle that ended up booting Iowa and New Hampshire from the mix and vaulting South Carolina to the top of the pack. “The 2024 calendar will absolutely not be the calendar for 2028,” said Nebraska state party chair Jane Kleeb. Under the current plan, South Carolina went first, then Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. “The process has to be rigorous, efficient and fair, and we have to make sure that it’s open and transparent,” said a state chair who asked not to be named. Scrapping a state like South Carolina from the top of the list may only alienate those voters.

She also used the stolen money on things like plane tickets and miscellaneous herbs and spices. She also claimed that her misuse of the company credit card was due to her clicking the wrong button at checkout, even though it happened over 1,000 times. According to projections from The Associated Press, Republicans flipped control of the Michigan state House, padded their narrow majorities in the New Hampshire state House and Senate, and maintained their majority in the Pennsylvania state Senate. In Arizona, Republicans appeared poised to expand their narrow majorities in the state House and state Senate, though the AP hasn’t yet called enough races to make that determination. In many districts in both states, Democrats had centered their message on the accomplishments the party achieved with that power. Democrats, however, maintained their 102-101 majority in the Pennsylvania state House — the only bright spot for the party in state legislative chambers where partisan control had been at stake. In addition, Republicans’ victories in state legislative races came even as Democratic groups massively outspent them.
