Boston Dynamics showed off a fully electric version of its humanoid robot Atlas on Wednesday. The robotics company retired its hydraulic humanoid robot, Atlas, on Tuesday but then posted a video on Wednesday debuting its new, fully electric Atlas. "We designed the electric version of Atlas to be stronger, more dexterous, and more agile," the company said. Boston Dynamics says the fully electric Atlas "will be stronger, with a broader range of motion than any of our previous generations." ☆ Ambitious research yields new atlas of human brain cells

The human brain is complex in terms of its utility - sensing, moving, reading, writing, speaking, thinking and more - and its cellular diversity. The research identified 3,313 cell types, roughly 10 times more than previously known, and the complete set of genes used by each cell type while also mapping their regional distribution in the brain. "The brain cell atlas as a whole provides the cellular substrate for everything that we can do as human beings," said neuroscientist Ed Lein of the Seattle-based Allen Institute for Brain Science, one of the researchers. The various cell types have distinct properties and are likely affected differently in disease, Lein said. "We are only at the very beginning of delineating the complexity of the human brain," said another of the researchers, Bing Ren, director of the University of California, San Diego Center for Epigenomics.

Scientists observed sleeping octopuses and saw their brains enter a deep sleep like ours. This deep sleep is similar to a dream state in mammals, so octopuses may also dream. For the study, scientists spied on multiple sleeping octopuses. By studying the octopus's brain activity, the team found that these cephalopods have similar active and quiet sleep cycles to us mammals and that certain periods of their active stage resembles rapid eye movement sleep. REM sleep is often when humans dream, leading scientists to wonder if octopuses may dream like us.

☆ Atlassian taps OpenAI to make its collaboration software smarter

Atlassian on Wednesday said it will draw on technology from startup OpenAI to add artificial intelligence features to a slew of the collaboration software company's programs. Atlassian has been building its own AI models for several years, but just started using OpenAI at the beginning of 2023. But Farquhar dismissed this concern, explaining that OpenAI won't be training its models on Atlassian's customer data, so Atlassian won't be necessarily making OpenAI better by giving it business. Atlassian employees have been able to use the new Atlassian Intelligence features internally, and they have become popular, especially for those leading teams, Anu Bharadwaj, president of Atlassian, said. Bharadwaj said Atlassian hasn't figured out how much to charge for Atlassian Intelligence.
